Irish Times Album review- John, Shelly & the Creatures

JOHN, SHELLY + THE CREATURES

Dinosaur Big Life Music ****

These Northerners arrive relatively unheralded and unhyped, which is a good thing. Unlike the other Northern Irish band of the moment (Two Door Cinema Club) John, Shelly + the Creatures let the music talk, and the result is more conversational and casual than in your face. The fact is that songs such as Cold War, Sunny Side Street, Sight of Your Chest, Killer, Frost and Long May You Reign do what really good songs should: sneak up on you, twist preconceptions, change your mind and then take it over. The range of instruments in use, including flugelhorn, mandolin, cello, viola, violin, glockenspiel and xylophone, indicates not so much an everything-and-the-kitchen-sink approach (which would usually be the case) but an exceptional grasp of texture, tone and theme. Hello everyone, so here we are in Paris, things have been moving swiftly since we arrived in January. We’ve been meeting up and jamming with some cool musicians, getting to know some creative people, having meetings with some interesting folk. Also we were lucky to be invited to the Irish Embassy in Paris for lunch last week and got to meet the Ambassador.Other news….just yesterday we signed off on a new worldwide management agreement. We are in the throes of recording a new album- but before that we will release our new EP titled STAR – which has a brand new song and some re-recorded & reproduced tracks from our debut album that is showing of a new direction in our music. Not to say that we are forgetful of our origins, in the new record (yet to be titled) we will still have our signature lo-fi numbers also. We can’t wait to work with some top producers on the new record.

Our new management is with INNATE MUSIC (Jamie Cullum, Dame Shirley Bassey, Universal Records) and GSPR and is one career choice that we fully embrace and are so excited to be a part of. The months ahead will see us travel a lot between territories: UK, France, Germany, Japan & Ireland. We are going in to record 2 new music videos next month and are very excited about that too as we are working with Top class directors.

We will be in London next week for some gigs and to meet up with some new members of the team and then will be back in Ireland in early March for some styling & re-stocking of cd’s. Meteor Award Nominee on Today FM at 1pm today- COLM LYNCH

The Meteor Award Nominee for Best newcomer COLM LYNCH, releases his fantastic new single ‘Kiss My Blues Away’ On March 26th. And will perform it on TODAY FM’s Ray Foley Show shortly after 1pm TODAY.

*Colm will perform in the RDS at the Leinster V Scarlets Rugby game to over 20,000 people on Feb 20th 2010*

Colm has been Described as “…Singer songwriting savior…” by The Irish Times

The release of the critically acclaimed first album put his vocal and songwriting skills on show to the nation for the first time. It received glowing plaudits from the likes of Dave Fanning, Hotpress, The Irish Times, In Dublin and a host of other people and publications. It was Album of the Week on Larry Gogan’s 2FM Radio show. Singles released from the album got extensive airplay on national and local radio. He also won the Balcony TV Best Male Award in 2007.

His current album, being his second studio album titled: Tickety-Boo, is picking up where he left off. While more polished, it still possesses the same characteristics that made his debut such a winner. Whether in a mellow mood or just plain aggressive, the music always comes from the heart. This is plain to see when witnessed in live performances. TICKETY BOO- is now available Nationwide and on iTunes. Remaining true to his philosophy that ‘a good song should have a strong melody and meaningful lyrics’, the ten track album features hit singles “It’s Coming Down” (previously playlisted on TODAY FM and 2FM) and the RTE playlisted “If I was In Your Shoes”.

Anyone expecting to see a singer-songwriter soulfully whispering into a microphone should think again. This will be a fevered, rock n’ roll affair! After all, there are only two schools of thought on Colm Lynch’s music: those who are confirmed fans and those who haven’t heard him yet!

Whether playing to hundreds of people in venues like Vicar St. Dublin or to a tiny audience somewhere off the beaten track, Lynch always delivers a memorable performance. Resting easy among his musical peers, Lynch has supported acts as diverse as The Blizzards, Julie Feeney, Kate Walsh, Aslan, John Power, Foy Vance and Mundy.

Starting 2010 off in style, Colm Lynch and his 8 piece band gathered in Studio 7 RTE Radio 1 two weeks ago, after being invited in by legendary DJ and TV host Pat Kenny. Performing the new single Kiss my Blues Away and If I was in Your Shoes, Colm and his band gave the performance of their lifetime and quite possibly one of the best Radio performances of the year.
