Who are we?

The Historical Harp Society of Ireland brings to life a lost sound world. Founded in 2002, it leads a rediscovery of Ireland’s illustrious medieval musical instrument, depicted in the national emblem: the early Irish harp. Silent for over 100 years, the ravishing sound – and the rarely heard music – of the oldest Irish harp sounds fresh to modern ears but also evokes the deepest wells of ancient Irish history and culture.

Áine Tyrrell Releases Powerful Song “PEOPLE LIKE ME AND YOU”

Tyrell has just announced the release of her latest song, ‘PEOPLE LIKE ME AND YOU’. This is the first single from her forthcoming album, ‘MISE ÉIRE’, which is a pioneering testament to artistic courage, resilience and hope born out of Áine’s remarkable journey from her native West Coast of Ireland to the East Coast of Australia.

Escaping a decade of domestic violence with her three children, Áine redefined her narrative from victimhood to triumph, PEOPLE LIKE ME AND YOU sings powerfully, into and out of this story. With a blend of genres, Áine’s raw and honest lyrics deliver a message of empowerment in the face of adversity, particularly addressing global issues of violence against women and within the music industry.

The inspiration for the track struck her in a defining moment during her performance at Splendour In The Grass when she remembered all she had battled to get there and felt the incredible connection between the audience and her music. They were people like her, all rising to the music, together.

In addition to the song release, Áine and her collaborators are taking the opportunity to affect social change. PEOPLE LIKE ME AND YOU is a combined song, short film and social advocacy project. Integrating her musical talents with her experience as an educator and activist, Áine and her team will be providing resources to grassroots organisations supporting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

“We’re not just releasing music; we’re shifting things, making change, one step at a time. Our mission is to raise awareness, hope, and to holistically bring art into healing spaces.” – Áine Tyrrell

The accompanying music video, directed and produced by Busty Beatz from Hot Brown Honey, First Nations Film studio Wirrim Media and featuring Riah Pelesa, intricately weaves together the story of Miriam, a Samoan woman navigating the challenges of single motherhood, eviction, and rediscovery of her artistic path. Through Miriam’s journey, the video embodies themes of resilience, hope, and the power of self-discovery.

PEOPLE LIKE ME AND YOU invites listeners to join a journey of transformation, to forge change and create possibilities no matter what the circumstance. As Áine simply puts it,

“If someone like me can stand here against all odds, so can you.”

Available on all streaming platforms Wed 15th May!

Sami Jo Releases ‘I’m Tired Of Calling My Mom’

Sami Jo has had a pen in her hand since day 1 and picked up a guitar to accompany her writing by the time she reached high school. She moved to Nashville, TN out of college and developed a name for herself around town, notoriously writing out all the personal, gut wrenching details of life and disguising them with pretty, catchy melodies. When you hear a Sami Jo song, artists like Noah Kahan, Colbie Caillat, and Kacey Musgrave may come to mind. Though her writing styles vary, her artistry stays true to her folk pop/americana roots.

Sami Jo’s move to Nashville began with a simple email on November 1, 2015 with a return sender: The Bluebird Cafe. Although famously known for their long audition process, the legendary music venue personally reached out to Sami Jo inviting her to play a Sunday Writer’s Night. Since that date, she has been recognized as NSAI’s “Ones to Watch,” has won the #1 song in SUSC International Songwriting competition, and a top 12 finalist in American Country Star worldwide competition.

Though new to releasing music, her last single, “Black & White Reality” hit 22k streams in the first 3 months with the top countries: United States and United Kingdom. She regularly plays to packed audiences in Nashville and in the past year she has led a successful International tour through England and Ireland where she performed on iconic stages including The Cavern Club, The Jacaranda, The Adelphi Hotel, and more. The brand new single ‘I’m Tired Of Calling My Mom’ is out from April 2024.

When Sami Jo is not touring Internationally, she is Nashville’s beloved host of “Sams Jams” bi-weekly writers round at the prestigious Virgin Hotel on Music Row. She uses her networking and promotion skills to provide a platform for nearly 800 artists per year to share their original music with industry professionals.

In this course you will discover two such laments and an air. All three are taken from the very first printed collection of Irish music, published in the heart of Dublin in 1724.

We will explore Alessia’s reconstructions of these, including historical playing techniques used by the old Irish harpers, working also on finer points of phrasing and dynamics. Along the way we will discover the stories and anecdotes behind the music.

Start the course with Suipair thighear Leoid [‘Lude’s super’], a fàilte [salute or welcome] piece attributed to Rorie Dall, ‘Blind Rorie’. Follow this up with the beautiful ‘Port Atholl’, a fitting contrast to the stately and regal Lude’s super. Round out the course with a sweet and unusual port collected by the Maclean Clephane sisters in the Hebrides, in the early nineteenth century.
