“Hailing from Limerick, Grimes has emerged as one of the country’s most promising pop acts of recent memory. After the release of her first batch of singles, Hotpress nominated Grimes alongside the likes of Dermot Kennedy and Denise Chaila for Irish artist of the year and one to watch. Imelda Kehoe Announces New Single ‘Ohio’ Set To Be Released Feb 10th 2023

Imelda Kehoe is an Irish Contemporary Folk singer-songwriter who has created her own style, which is influenced by Folk, Blues, and with elements of Soul. Her songs are melody-rich, weaving a tapestry of stories, and life experiences written with the listener at heart and with a definite World music feel.

‘Ohio’ is the first release from Imelda’s forthcoming Album and brings the listener through America’s troubled past from the Indian War to the American Civil War, with lyrics that are relevant today.

Imelda comments on the song:

“Ohio was inspired by Sebastian Barry’s ‘Days Without End’ which I read in the summer of 2021. I fell in love with the story and his brilliant writing and I read it a few days whilst on holiday. Once I had finished it, I read it again. I love to write Songs that are inspired by human stories and have elements in them that everyone can relate to.

I think it is the greatest compliment when someone says that a Song you wrote really connects with their own life story because that means that you’ve done something right in revealing enough of yourself to make it genuine but have focused on the listener’s experience, which is always my starting point. If someone is going to invest a few minutes of their precious time listening to my Song, I want it to be worth it.

The pre-chorus to Ohio is inspired by Barry’s reasoning for why they were good at Soldiering: “How we were able to see slaughter without flinching. Because we were nothing ourselves, to begin with,” This line inspired the Pre-Chorus of Ohio:

“By the Holy River wide, Do we live, or do we die?

We are nothing anyway.”

Other themes from the book that inspired Ohio were the savagery of the American Indian War, Starvation, Boredom, and the Economic devastation of the Civil war. Another significant theme is Identity. The main character, Thomas McNulty is more comfortable when he is dressed as a female and ultimately wants to be John Cole’s female wife, not his male lover. This inspired the lyric:

“If we could rebuild a life, Find a star too great for the sky. For a life not approved, what have we got to lose?”

Musically, Ohio is structured in the traditional folk style but with a contemporary edge, thanks to Larry Hogan’s production and the Lead Guitar played by Horacio Valdivieso, an Ecuadorian Guitar player, who I have worked with on a number of projects”.

The song is also reminiscent of Emmylou Harris Pancho and Lefty with a hint of The Eagles Tequila Sunrise and was produced by Irish producer, Larry Hogan.

It was written and inspired following several visits to Redbooks Independent Book shop in Wexford where Imelda spent many hours among the labyrinth of Second hand-books.

Ohio was recorded at Windmill Lane Studios and produced by Larry Hogan and Mastered by Michael Egan.

Editors Notes

From a big Irish/English family, spending most of her childhood moving around and living in beautiful locations, while her parents renovated old properties. There would always be gatherings, campfires, and music and she describes these early influences as shaping her love of good melody, nature, and travel, which is a recurring theme in her music.

Imelda trained as a Nurse and worked in inner City A&E and Intensive Care Departments and cites these experiences as being influential in her Song Writing.

Video: Recorded at Red Books, Independent Book shop, Wexford, with the kind permission of Wally O’Neill and was filmed by Roberto Forte.

Under Starling Announce New Single ‘Trick Of The Light’ Set To Be Released Feb 17th

Bringing a unique brand of alternative rock to the Irish music scene, Under Starling hail from the Viking City of Ireland. The band’s reverb-soaked melodies and dark distorted riffs, euphoria envelops the listener. A powerful rhythm section provides a rocky undertone to their pop-laden music. Sonic influences include Biffy Clyro, Foals, and The Japanese House.

Through their energetic live shows, this gritty four-piece is rapidly growing its fan base. Recent singles Arrows and Icarus from their Mongrel EP have been praised by the likes of Hot Press and RTE.

From high-octane crowd-surfing, energetic mosh pits, and frontman Danny’s interaction with his fans during the show, the band is one to watch for 2023. The escapism offered by their music and live shows brings people together like a flock of starlings. “We are like murmurations”

The first musical offering from the band of 2023 is the new single “Trick of the Light” which is a metaphor for the fantasies of a hopeless romantic, set to be released on Feb 17th, 2023.

“Throughout the song, we tether the line between the dream world and reality. Rather than following the classic Hollywood trope, the underdog does not get the person of their dreams. The closing message is one of self-growth and learning how to move on”.

The song was a result of Danny’s involvement in Charlie Puths Monthly course. One of the tasks was to challenge yourself by creating a composition out of your comfort zone. And so, this alternative synth-pop song was born.

While creating the record the band used a number of vintage recording techniques. A Roberts 770x tape recorder brought a retro effect to electronic samples, while a Hammondorgan paired with the timeless Leslie speaker introduced a warm analogue feel to the track.

Recorded in Monique Recording Studios, Cork.

Recorded, produced, and mixed by Christian Best.

Mastered by Tony Fitz.

Crispr Kid Release New Single ‘First Responder’

FIRST RESPONDER – by CRISPR KID Out Now!

“…serious E-Street/Arcade Fire band vibes off this” – BBC

CRISPR Kid are a Dublin based 4-piece guitar band who released their debut E.P. ‘Fresno Rescue Mission’ in December 2019 and performed blistering gigs at The Sound House, Whelan’s ‘Ones To Watch 2020’ and a headline show at Lost Lane, Dublin in late January 2020. Drawing influences from the likes of The National, REM, Death Cab for Cutie, St Vincent, Tom Petty & New Order, they deliver an epic fusion of Indie-Rock.

They recently finished their debut album ‘Down with the Kid’ in September 2021 which is set for release in March ’22. The band are set to release indie-thumper ‘First Responder’ from this record on Jan 21st this year.

Home-recordists Pauric Sweeney (singer) and bassist Stephen Browne had been songwriting with Dublin producer Phil Dobie for much of 2019 and brought brilliant Brazilian drummer Romulo Passos into the fold that summer. The mercurial Gary Mackey joined on lead guitar to make up the 4-piece in August 2020 and the band began recording DWTK as an EP at Darklands Studios last November under the guidance of engineering ace, Daniel Doherty. A purple-patch ensued and the Down with the Kid expanded into a full LP as the lockdown persisted.

It’s no accident that the band’s name alludes to the contraversial C.R.I.S.P.R. gene editing phenomenon. They decided to democratise their own genes – or mixes to be precise – by posting the recorded stems on the day of all releases for free on CrisprKid.com – thus allowing up and coming producers/engineers to attempt their own versions.

You can stream the single across all major platforms: Spotify, iTunes, Tidal, etc now!

Loud Motive’s music is a fusion of seductive guitar melodies and intricate wordplay with hip-hop sensibilities. In this way, a vibrant, mainstream sonic landscape is created. The band’s experimental sound occasionally plunges us into a world of sweet swirling sounds combining the poignant essence of grunge rock with afro beats and twists, juxtaposed with socioeconomic and politically charged lyrics reminiscent of various news stories that have been making headlines in Ireland in recent years. Loud Motive are “The act to watch” in 2022, unafraid to speak their truths and mirror them across their music repertoire.

Commenting on their music, Loud Motive’s Marvell delves into every- day issues and scenarios the young Dubliner has dealt with as he and his longtime friends try to assert themselves as Hip-Hop heavyweights in the ever growing Irish Urban community:

Our mission is to showcase a different side of the musical talent that is on display here in Ireland and to take it to the world stage, at a new height where we can be proud to say we have played a fundamental part in the growth of Irish Urban music and art.

Marvell, Ridler Tempo & Dano – Loud Motive

The band have acquired a wealth of talent behind them, including world renowned producer and musician Danny Saber who has worked with Madonna, David Bowie, U2, Busta Rhymes and Public Enemy to name a few. They draw musical influences from Kanye West, Lil Wayne and 50 Cent. Through all the different elements they brought to hiphop and the connections they brought forth, they made it easy for the band to resonate with. Others include Miles Davis, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Red Hot Chili Peppers and J. Cole who then inspired them to take a deeper approach to writing music, allowing them to connect emotionally, spiritually and mentally with the creative dimensions to their craft.

Dublin Trio ‘Dark Isle’ Announce New Music

Dark Isle formed in 2019, born out of a long-term collaboration between three musicians in Dublin and Barcelona: JP Coakley (lead vocalist), John Donnelly (guitar, bass, keyboards and provides backing vocals) and Diarmuid Ryan (guitar).  Purveyors of well-crafted songs with original melodies and lyrics, they are here to disrupt and give you something challenging to listen to.

Their home-produced collection of music, set to be released throughout 2022, spans a bridge of genres from indie rock, electronica to techno to punk, and much in between. From a simple guitar grows weird and wonderful sonics with beats to push you around. Most of the bands formative influences include writers or poetic songwriters such as Kurt Vonnegut, George Orwell, Bob Dylan, Jennifer Johnston, John Le Carré, Joyce, Ry Cooder, Emmy Lou Harris, JJ Cale, Little feat and The Beatles.

We live in a dark place with glimpses of light. Songs about Love, Loss & Identity. Always about our lives. Dark Isle is eternal for the times we live in.  The music could be electronic, dance or indie, but you might catch your granny whistling along between pills.

Dark Isle’s music is real but also full of hope. We’re not running from anything. That’s a new kind of battle. I think we’re more interested in signing up for the resistance than starting a war.

The first musical release from the band is ‘Brave’ (a-side)and ‘Come Back Home’ (b-side), jointly released across all digital platforms from Feb 18th 2022.
