Nigel Mooney, Ireland’s King of the Blues, Announces New Single and Album

Widely regarded as Ireland’s leading blues singer and guitarist, Nigel Mooney announces new music! As a charismatic figure in Dublin’s jazz and blues scene since the early 1980’s, his Gripewater Blues Band spearheaded the blues movement in Ireland. Self-taught, Mooney was influenced by the blues from an early age and his hard-bop style of guitar playing is expressive and melodic. A warm and rich tenor voice and a remarkable sense of pitch distinguish him from other singers.

The new music comes in the form of the Radio Single ‘Memphis Mooney’ (Sept 2nd) and long player album ‘Mooneys Blues’, set for an Oct 14th release date. The collection of songs sonically demonstrates that the musician and artist is at the top of his game, with an album that will resonate deeply with Irish blues and jazz audiences alike.

Mooney comments on the new single:

Memphis Mooney is a song about an Irish musician touring the American mid-west and deep-south, only to discover his own mid-life and deep-rooted inadequacies. I hope it resonates with the listener.

A native of Dublin, Ireland, Nigel Mooney was born on August 12th, 1963. In his 12th year, he became a member of the school band and started playing the guitar. In his early teens, Mooney discovered the blues, and in particular the 50’s Chicago guitar styles of B.B. King, Albert King and Buddy Guy.

Nigel’s “All My Love’s In Vain” album, via Rubyworks, became one of Ireland’s highest-selling jazz albums after its release in 2005. The single “Beautiful Day” charted at the top of the Irish hit parade and continues to receive regular airplay. His latest single ‘Memphis Mooney’ will be released on Sept 2nd and features Mooney’s regular quartet plus guest appearances by the great tenor saxophonist Jean Toussaint (ex- Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers) and backing vocalists Deborah Swiney and Carolyn Chatman (ex- Al Green).
