0001 - Columbia Mills._

Emerging from Irelands’ coastal town of Bray and from the wreckage of an economic collapse, Columbia Mills are comprised of duo Ste Ward and Fiachra Treacy (guitars/ keys/ vocals). They create a hedonistic mix of musical textures, with lush reverb-saturated guitars and glorious beats that have inspired beautiful tragic sounds. The bands influences touch on the 80s synth sounds of New Order and The Cure and fuse them with the 90s indie guitar sounds of The Verve and Primal Scream on a bed of electronic and organic beats a la Massive Attack and LCD Sound System. However you also hear a fresh modern sound that aims to draw the listener into the unique headspace that is Columbia Mills.

While it is clear the band have worked hard on their sound it is important to note that underneath the production there are songs of real life, drawing their power from deep personal experience. Nothing is contrived. If you strip the songs down to the bones they will still get under your skin.

There is a harsh honesty and arrogance to the songs, this band have been through the mill and are not afraid to sing about it. Lyrically, subjects touch on urban decay, self-destruction, institutional abuse, family feuds and falling in love with the wrong people. Their music gets into your head, moves you, takes you someplace familiar yet new.

The band name itself, ‘Columbia Mills’, is a kind of name legacy, evolving from the legendary building based on Dublin’s Quays. In the early 90s the building became a mecca for the illegal rave scene bringing people together from all walks of life and all musical tastes. The diversity of music and social classes is something that has left a lasting impression on the city and indeed band, before its premature demise by an early morning police raid, which ended the cult location.

Listen up. You’re going to fall hard for this band.

ENCAS SERQHAR ‘Mesmerise’ – EP OUT NOV 7th

Encas Serqhar is an electronic music project entirely composed, recorded and produced by the artist MDK who is based in Galway, Ireland. Drawing comparison to such acts as Clint Mansell, Daft Punk, Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode. Encas Serqhar strive to create unusual sounds, emotive melodies, strange sonic atmospheres and generally eclectic yet memorable and catchy music with a broad appeal. The 3 track EP ‘Mesmerise’, due to be released in early Nov 2014, demonstrates the musical connotations of the aforementioned.

colormixA brief summary of MDK’s relevant academic qualifications would include; Masters Degree in Musical Composition, Honours Degree in Multimedia (majoring in Audio Production), and a Diploma in Film Scoring from the Berklee College of Music. On a more practical level, he has been working in the industry for about two years now and has written several high profile pieces that have received public acclaim, for both television and radio. Writing music since the age of 7 years old, it was around that time that his Father purchased a piano for his Mother (on her birthday) and once he heard her playing it – he was hooked. The exploration of sounds and his musical journey had begun.

The name itself is taken from a short story that MDK wrote when he was younger. It featured a fictional city (entitled Encas Serqhar) and it basically represents creativity and original thought. All the music is written by MDK, and the music for the first album, from which the Mesmerise Ep is taken from is primarily electronic and reminiscent of bands like Justice, Kavinsky, College, Clint Mansell, Moby and Depeche Mode. It’s heavily inspired by French House and 80’s electronica. Much of the themes for the songs with lyrics are inspired by the sci-fi literature and the fictional story upon which the Encas Serqhar name was base. Due to this unusual creative basis, much of the music sounds a little otherworldly and bizarre – but in a pleasant way. Also, as a professional (classically trained etc) composer and sound designer, most of the songs are very heavily layered and not at all minimal, despite the current minimalist craze in pop/electronic music these days. There are upwards of 50 individual tracks/instrument parts on each song – “My attitude is if less is more, more is way more (if done correctly). Minimalism is often an excuse for mediocre musical minds”.

EP Tracklisting:

1 – Mesmerise

2 – Solas

3 – The Voices Of Our Dead Friends

katie and molly evoke

Sixteen year old Katie O’ Connor began singing at the age of five years old. That was the beginning of her journey in performance arts, as by the age of seven, she joined up to a stage school called ‘Live Wire’ where she remained up until the age of 10, an environment that nurtured her love for singing, dancing and acting. Which lead her to her first ever performance, when she was nine in the Olympia Theatre, Dublin. Where she sang a solo in the production of “Whistle down the wind”. She later performed as a dancer in two of the Jedward pantos in the Olympia theatre, recording backing vocals for most of the songs that were used in the Panto in a studio owned by David Hayes the was musical director of the show. She also recorded backing vocals with David for two songs on the legendary RTE’s Late Late Toy show!

She recorded her first song professionally with Producer Ivan Fitzpatrick when she was 12 and has been working with Ivan since then, recording a lot of covers and original songs along with Ivan’s original compositions. Katie plays Guitar and is self-taught. Her musical influences include Beyoncé, Ben Howard, Ed Sheeran, Christina Aguilera, Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Johnny Cash and Dean Martin.

When Katies younger cousin became ill with Cancer, she wrote the song ‘Just Too Young’ which will be out in Oct 10th and all proceeds go towards the trust which has already raised over €120,000 towards further treatment for little Molly. Katie wrote the song when she was 15 and explains her reason behind it below:

“When you are told something that changes everything, you really don’t know what to do. You can cry, be angry, feel guilty, but doing that won’t change anything. When someone you love becomes ill, and not just ill like a flu, ill as in “this is serious”, what do you do? There are no words to describe how you feel. There is too many emotions, but all I know is you could never feel worse when you get that news. At first I didn’t know what to do, but who would? Her life now revolves around a hospital. She has lost all of her beautiful red hair. She has never lost that big smile on her face. When something like this happens you want to do every thing possible to help. This is why I wrote this song…When I started I didn’t know what to write? What to say? How to say it? As I wrote it, it seemed to just come to me, like I was telling a story and not a song. I want people to listen to this and understand what Molly is going through, and what my family is going through. It’s not fair what has happened, but now that it has, we need people to know about it. We need help. We can’t do this alone.”

The Furious Haze announce details of their new EP!! out Aug 23rd titled BRING ME UP + Dublin date Whelans Aug 22nd!

THE FURIOUS HAZE

The Furious Haze EP cover

EP: BRING ME UP

OUT ON ITUNES ON AUGUST 23RD

+ DUBLIN DATE AUG 22ND WHELANS

The small auditorium is packed and on the verge of violence due to the conditions. The lights over stage twitch from a leaking pipe above, suddenly the concentration breaks, the hum off the crowd dissipates. Now, only the sound of the sub plot coming from the Saint Patrick’s Day riot far off in the distance can be heard. The concentration breaks again to the first click of the sticks, the strum of the guitar, the first glass thrown with love, the revolution begins, “The Furious Haze” are born.

Rasheed Sassy (best seat in the house), Marcus O’ Toole stage right, Martyn Lyle stage left, dead centre stood Graham Hatton and deep in violent territory, Peter Wright controlling the desk. In those days they were the “The Black Sheep” but now, politics dictates otherwise.

After six years of breaking strings, stage invasions, brawl breakouts, glass rockets in and out, road trips that went very wrong, crowd dives that turned bloody, broken and thrashed gear, vomit on stage, civil war, falling through windows and doors, honouring the faithful, and a lot of alcohol taken. Finally, “The Furious Haze” have finished recording their debut album. Channeling the furiousness of The Sex Pistols amassed with The Clash.

Recorded in the Grouse Lodge and mixed by Phil Hayes at Apollo, Temple Lane Studios and Mastered by Fergal Davis; The Furious Haze will release their EP “BRING ME UP” on AUGUST 23RD 2013.

Wayne Brennan new single Roots in These Lands out on iTunes now!

Local Singer/Songwriter Wayne Brennan has had a rather busy few months from winning first prize in the Sean McCarthy ballad contest in Co. Kerry in August to winning this year’s RTE/RAAP awards in the Traditional Irish/Folk category. The competition saw hundreds of applications coming in from all over the country which were judged by a panel which included Mary Black, Fiachna Ó Braonáin Hothouse Flowers, Ciarán Tourish of Altan, Gerry O’Connor, Eamonn Lenihan, and Niall Carroll. The shortlist was announced during the week and the final competition was held in the RTE Studios and broadcast live on the John Creedon show on RTE Radio 1 Thursday 20th September.

Wayne stepped up and was the first musician to perform in his category. Along with fellow musician Andrew Healy on backing vocals and percussion Wayne played an acoustic version of his song ‘Roots In These Lands’ which won the contest. The song was written during the year on a boat travelling through Co.Offaly as a part of ‘A Grand Experience’ (commissioned by the Offaly County Council under the percent for artist’s scheme), which was screened on RTE in Mid October.

Brennan released his critically acclaimed debut album ‘In My Hands’ in May 2009 and spent 18 months opening for acts such as Jack L, Mick Flannery, John Spillane and The Gypsy Kings. He then successfully headlined his own Irish nationwide tour in 2011. His TOP 20 Debut Irish chart Single “And I Love” received over ½ million hits on YouTube to date.

Wayne took over a year out to write his forthcoming 2nd album titled ‘Live, Love, Sing and Dance’. He has travelled and written this album in Bali (Indonesia), Italy, Fuerteventura (Spain) and Ireland. This highly anticipated follow up album is due for release in early 2013. Prior to this the official release date has been set for the Song that has seen Wayne receive the well-deserved accolades his fine musical craft demands.
