‘Always Loved A Film’ is the first full single to be taken from Underworld’s dazzling new album, ‘Barking’. Given a global premier by Pete Tong on Radio 1, followed by a “Hottest Record in the World Right Now” from Zane Lowe, ‘Always Loved A Film’ is a collaboration between Underworld and techno producers Mark Knight and D. Ramirez, resulting in seven ecstatic minutes of pressure-cooked euphoria. Remixes include Solo’s percussive work out, Michael Woods’ deep and dubby epic, Breakage’s stripped back, minimalist version and DJ Madskillz’s bouncy dutch house. Following on from a barn-storming headline performance at The Roundhouse on a balmy July evening – as part of the iTunes festival – Underworld return triumphantly with their first new album in almost 3 years this September.

NEW RELEASE:::::::

With a career that has already spanned two decades, The Charlatans – Martin Blunt (bass), Jon Brookes (drums), Tim Burgess (vocals), Mark Collins (guitar) and Tony Rogers (keyboards) – release their new album ‘Who We Touch’, on September 10th 2010.

Their eleventh studio album, ‘Who We Touch’ was produced by Youth (Paul McCartney, Primal Scream and The Verve) and was recorded at Britannia Row in London, on the desk that New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’ was recorded on. Featuring eleven tracks, the album must surely rank as their boldest to date radically broadening, in places, their aesthetic remit. It is, says Burgess, “a soulful voyage”, a journey through moods uplifting and profound, dark and delirious, ultimately concluding in blissful optimism. Its sound is inspired by many heroes, yet always sounds like no-one other than The Charlatans themselves.

Opener, ‘Love Is Ending’, is the first single to be taken from the album, released on July 30th. ‘Oh!’ is a beautiful song of reconciliation, as complex as its shifting time signatures (one section is in 3/4 waltz time), and then ‘You Can Swim’, an exquisite ooze of ambience, reminiscent of ‘Another Green World’-era Eno, with whose creative ideas the album began. Lurking at the end of the album is hidden track ‘I Sing The Body Eclectic’ featuring Crass’s Penny Rimbauld on vocals. Gee Vaucher who did the iconic artwork for all of Crass’s releases, also provides ‘Who We Touch’ with it’s eerie collaged cover image.

Barking is the title of Underworld’s first album in three years, and their first to be constructed with a brilliant cast of co-conspirators. All the tracks were written by the band in their Essex studio before being given to handpicked studio heads from across the whole spectrum of dance music to add some of their style and creativity to the band’s raw material. The result is a pimped-up Underworld record and their finest collection of songs in over a decade.

From the first undulating pulses of submariner bass, the first vocals – soft like a whisper in the ear – and the first fizz of hi-hats that force along the pace, the sound is unmistakably Underworld. Electronics wrapped effortlessly around songs; streams of consciousness lyrics that form indelible images; a perfectly balanced mix of melody and rhythm. Underworld’s sixth studio album is a thundering return to form, although it’s fair to say that the band responsible have never really been below par.

Underworld are Rick Smith and Karl Hyde. They have been working together in music for thirty years since meeting in Cardiff University in the late ’70s. Following time working in various bands with luminaries like Conny Plank, Iggy Pop and Debbie Harry, Smith and Hyde (with help from DJ Darren Emerson) began experimenting with making club music in the early ’90s, first as Lemon Interupt then reactivating one of their old band names – Underworld – releasing their first single proper, Mmm… Skyscraper, I Love You, in 1993. As well as becoming the first band from the nascent ‘dance’ scene to grace the cover of a weekly music paper, they scored massive critical hits with each of their album releases (Dubnobasswithmyheadman, Second Toughest In The Infants, Beaucoup Fish, One Hundred Days Off and Oblivion With Bells).

In 2005, Underworld released the Riverrun series, a trio of downloadable mixes of new material and works-in-progress, making them one of the first acts of their scale to attempt to directly sell their own records. The band continue to release alternate versions and curios through underworldlive.com

Underworld’s continuing relationship with director Danny Boyle has seen their music used in many of his movies. In 1996 a former B-side track, Born Slippy (Nuxx), soundtracked an entire summer, selling close to a million copies when released as a single. They recently scored Boyle’s sci-fi movie Sunshine.

In the early ’90s Smith and Hyde helped co-found the design company tomato. Karl has recently worked extensively with Brian Eno on the collaborative Pure Scenius project, playing largely improvised gigs at Sydney’s Opera House and at the Brighton Festival.

Underworld remain one of the most innovative and dynamic live bands on the planet – after a series of already announced Australian dates this June, they will be touring the album extensively towards the end of the year. “Scribble”, the first new material from the new album to see the light of day, is available now from underworldlive.com and will be commercially released on 28th June 2010, including a remix by Hospital recording artist, Netsky. The band will also headline the iTunes Festival at London’s Roundhouse on 17th July.

Nell Bryden, has announced she will be releasing a new digital download single, Tonight (Ash Howes Radio Mix), on Monday 19^th April.   Her last single, Not Like Loving You, spent an incredible six weeks on the BBC Radio 2 A List, and was described by the Daily Mirror (****) as “a big bold production – keening pedal steels, bright edgy horns and a massed choir – push the incomparable thrill of the title to the fore.  Swell” .  The original version of Tonight can be found on Bryden’s recently released album What Does It Take?

Critics praised Nell, saying “ Her vocal versatility is supported by consummate songwriting skills … Think of a female Nick Lowe with a better voice” (Uncut) and “An eclectic collection, it takes in country blues, Dixieland Jazz and her warm, rich voice even shows a touch of the Roberta Flacks” (Q).

Bryden is fast becoming one of the most talked about and sought after new artists, building the buzz the old-fashioned way with word-of-mouth endorsements of her live shows.   With four international tours (and 500 shows) in the last 18 months under her belt, including tours with KT Tunstall, and The Counting Crows, and a self-released debut single, What Does It Take, spending 7 weeks on the BBC R2 A-list (Second Time Around spent over 2 months on the RTE Radio1 playlist and was Song of the Week on Today FM)- she is definitely one to watch.  Bryden also appeared on RTE TV’s the Late Late show on her first single release of Second Time Around.

This was the biggest ever 1 day session to be staged at Abbey Road in the history of the famous recording studios. Multi-million selling artists from Michael Bolton to Robin Gibb, to Hayley Westenra contributed to the song, written by A1′s Mark Read and Robert Hart (Bad Company, Distance, The Jones Gang). They performed alongside The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Pipes & Drums from the Army School of Bagpipe Music and Drumming, Bugles from The Academy of Music at Kneller Hall, a Choir of Celebrities and the Carmel Thomas Youth Choir. Paul Carrack, Kenny Jones, Paul Rodgers, Lee Mead, Mark Read, Mica Paris, Natasha Hamilton, Haley Westenra, Carol Decker, Nell Bryden and Liz McClarnon also starred.

In other music news here from The GS HQ- its nice to see Black Francis single ‘SIX LEGGED MAN’ (taken from new album NONSTOPEROTIK) gaining airtime over at TODAY FM & BBC + other radio stations in Ireland. The Last Tycoons album gathered a few reviews over the past few days from HOTPRESS describing the band as ‘unambiguously committed to the  music’. They play on ARPIL 2nd in TOWER RECORDS (Dublin). Colm Lynch was recently in with Newstalk on THE WEEKEND BLEND and on The Irish Show, you can check that out here. Carosel just signed a worldwide management deal and revamped their myspace. Ocean Colour Scene will be met by hoards of fans again in Dublin’s Olympia in April as they partake in This years FM104′s THE GIG is aid of ISPCC. They are also on the RTE radio1 playlist and are Fm104s album of the week for their new album ‘SATURDAY’. Hitman Lord launched his new single ‘I Drank as I’ in style in Odessa last Thursday. John, Shelly & the Creatures recorded a very special song for PHANTOM FM. Groove Armada have been receiving great reviews on their new album ‘BLACK LIGHT’. With Metro declaring it as an official ‘hello to daytime radio’.

These Northerners arrive relatively unheralded and unhyped, which is a good thing. Unlike the other Northern Irish band of the moment (Two Door Cinema Club) John, Shelly + the Creatures let the music talk, and the result is more conversational and casual than in your face. The fact is that songs such as Cold War, Sunny Side Street, Sight of Your Chest, Killer, Frost and Long May You Reign do what really good songs should: sneak up on you, twist preconceptions, change your mind and then take it over. The range of instruments in use, including flugelhorn, mandolin, cello, viola, violin, glockenspiel and xylophone, indicates not so much an everything-and-the-kitchen-sink approach (which would usually be the case) but an exceptional grasp of texture, tone and theme. The band made a significant move in their musical career when they released their single ‘ANGELINE’ to receive critical acclaim and radio support from BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio Ulster, U105fm, Phantom Fm and many more. Following in the footsteps of fellow Northern Irish band SNOW PATROL, they then signed a publishing deal with Big Life Music Ltd (Snow Patrol, The Verve, Badly Drawn Boy…). Were their single “Long May You Reign” was featured in the Discover Northern Ireland TV, radio and cinema advert campaign. After a massively successful album pre-launch in The Village last year, the new & stunning studio album from Colm Lynch -titled TICKETY BOO- is now available Nationwide and on iTunes. The new single KISS MY BLUES AWAY is certainly a vast testament to Colm’s ability. Remaining true to his philosophy that ‘a good song should have a strong melody and meaningful lyrics’, this critically acclaimed artist is eager to impress with his latest offering.
