IN A MASHUP WITH FLO RIDA’S “GOOD FEELIN’”

“She Sells Sanctuary,” the international hit from British rock band The Cult, and Sunshine State rapper Flo Rida’s Top 10 smash “Good Feelin,” will be featured this Sunday as a mashup in one of Budweiser’s Super Bowl commercials.

The one-minute spot is a celebratory romp through several decades of great times in America that begins with the end of Prohibition in 1933.

Written by The Cult’s vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy, “She Sells Sanctuary” reached #15 on the UK charts and was a Top 40 dance hit in the U.S.  In a review, one journalist wrote, “Duffy’s liquid, quasi-psychedelic guitar intro over a buzz of flanged feedback suddenly rips into a triumphant, driving lead melody that’s jaw dropping.”

Choice of Weapon, The Cult’s first new studio album in five years, will be released on May 22 (Cooking Vinyl), and the band – Astbury, Duffy, drummer John Tempesta, and bassist Chris Wyse – will tour extensively in support of it.

One of the finest British rock acts to have enjoyed worldwide success over the last few decades, The Cult has wrapped up recording ‘Choice of Weapon’, the group’s first studio album in five years.  Released on 21^st May 2012 in UK (and May 18^th in Ireland) on their new UK label Cooking Vinyl, its 10 tracks reveal the band at its rawest and most visceral, encapsulating cinematic visions and themes of love, revolt, and redemption.   Fans can get an early taster of the album from 2pm on Tuesday 31^st January when the track ‘Lucifer’ will be available as a free download through the band’s website www.thecult.us.  Details are being confirmed for a worldwide tour and will be announced soon.

‘Choice of Weapon’ is the follow up to the critically-acclaimed 2007 release ‘Born Into This’ that the UK’s Mojo magazine called “a wholehearted, utopian and irrefutably exciting record.”  Long-time Cult collaborator and producer Bob Rock (Metallica, Bush) – who produced one of The Cult’s most successful albums, the platinum-certified ‘Sonic Temple’ – put the finishing touches on the foundations that were laid by co-producer Chris Goss (Queens of the Stone Age, U.N.K.L.E., Masters of Reality).

The record was written by Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy, recorded in New York City, Los Angeles, the California high desert, and the band’s Witch Mountain studios in the Hollywood Hills between July and December 2011.  The new release features founding members Astbury on vocals and Duffy on guitars, with drummer John Tempesta and bassist Chris Wyse.  “We have had the opportunity to work with two of the most influential and talented producers in the world today,” said Astbury.  “They pushed us beyond our comfort zone, and helped us craft ‘Choice of Weapon.’”

The album is aimed at the heart of The Cult’s loyal following.  It reflects the current discontent and destruction of our eco systems, the search for individual meaning against a tide of rampant materialism, narcissism and disconnected lives.  “We went deeper . . . we worked a bit harder on this record.  We have great fans and they deserve our best,” added Duffy, “and I feel this is one of our best records, maybe the best.”

The album is released as a special edition fan pack on May 14^th, followed by digital and double vinyl on May 21^st (May 18^th in Ireland) and the CD and deluxe CD’s on June 4^th (June 1^st in Ireland) .

Announce Noel Gallagher arena supports, free download and new label.

Reverend & The Makers have announced a string of support shows with Noel Gallagher in February and March which will be preceded by a free download taken from the band’s as yet untitled new album, scheduled for release in April /May 2012. The download will available from RATM facebook and will go live on Friday 10th February.

The album, which is currently being mixed in London, was recorded in Sheffield and London produced by Youth (The Verve/U2), Jason Cox/James Dring (Gorillaz, Professor Green) and RATM.

The band has also signed a new worldwide record deal with Cooking Vinyl, home of The Prodigy and Marilyn Manson.

 A Message from The Rev…

So we’ve been away for a minute. Well more than a minute. Truth be said I fancied a bit of time out the bear-pit for half an hour to get myself a bit of a holiday, and well, calm the fuck down n enjoy myself a bit. Not that I sat completely on my arse for the best part of two years. Errrr…. (I’ve kind of forgot what you’re supposed to talk about in a post even though I decided to write one!!!)

I’ve been a few mad places in Asia, Africa and South America, which was unbelievable. I bought some daft instruments while I was away too, none of which I can play but they look right good in my house. I did a bit more with Afrika Express. If you don’t know what it is then check it out at www.africaexpress.co.uk. It’s a thing Damon Albarn set up and it’s fuckin’ amazing. I did a little gig with Mick Jones from The Clash at The Leadmill and I got up and sang ‘Bankrobber’ with him, which was a proper buzz. Mostly though, I had a sound system with my mates Jimmy Welsh and Matic Mouth which was mega. We threw house parties and warehouse parties, and generally got daft doing parties for nish, until we got a bit too daft and the police started turning up to every do we had, so we knocked that on the head and I decided I might fancy getting back to the day job…

I just kind of fell into writing this album by accident and the next thing was it was nearly finished. I’m bang into it, which you’ll all expect me to say. But I enjoyed making it more than any album I’ve made so far. It’s all up and mainly bangers, so we had a right old laugh in the process. Special thanks go to Ed the Pilot and Jimmy and his Onkens. The album is being produced by a combination of Jason Cox and James Dring (Gorrrilaz, Good the Bad & the Queen) and Youth (The Verve, U2), and for what it’s worth there’s no politics on the album. Why not? Well as much as I’m into all that and I still believe much the same, I’ve said it now and it quickly becomes boring if you labor the point too much. In truth I sort of bored myself with it. I’ve taken down the Che Guevara poster for this album; you may or may not be glad to know. So we have some new band members who have joined as well. Ryan Jenkinson on drums who used to play with a band I used to be into called This Girl. On bass we have borrowed Joe Carnall from the Book Club. Joe was the singer in Milburn, who were the band that kinda kicked off the Sheffield thing a few years ago, so I’m made up to have them both play with us.

The album’s out before the summer and will be preceded by a tour supporting Noel Gallagher on his arena dates around the UK. We are well looking forward to it, and hope we’ll see you there. If not I hope you might catch us on our own headline tour later in the year…

The band; Liam Howlett, Keith Flint and Maxim Reality beat off competition from French duo Daft Punk.

Keith Flint of The Prodigy commented: “To walk off a stage and feel like we smashed it – that’s the reward for us, to see the crowd react and know we’ve done what we’ve come to do. But something like this is truly voted for by the people – and essentially we are nothing without them, so it feels awesome and really respectful.”

Mixmag offered their congratulations to The Prodigy, ‘an act who have managed to stay as exciting as ever, over two decades on from their first gig’.

The National Concert Hall have announced the official unveiling of a portrait of Eleanor McEvoy by the acclaimed Irish artist ‘Robert Ballagh’ in the John Field Room in The National Concert Hall, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2 on Friday January 20 2012 at 5.30 pm.

Robert ‘Bobby’ Ballagh is particularly well known for his hyperealistic renderings of well-known Irish literary, historical or establishment figures. His painting style was strongly influenced by pop art. Among the theatre sets he has designed are sets for Riverdance, I’ll Go On, Gate Theatre (1985), Samuel Beckett’s Endgame (1991) and Oscar Wilde’s Salomé (1998). He has also designed over 70 Irish postage stamps and the last series of Irish banknotes, “Series C”, before the introduction of the euro. He is a member of Aosdána. Ballagh’s paintings are held in several public collections of Irish painting including the National Gallery of Ireland, the Hugh Lane Gallery, the Ulster Museum, Trinity College Dublin, and Nuremberg’s Albrecht Durer House. One of his latest pieces is a privately commissioned portrait of a woman and artist whom Ballagh has the utmost respect for: Eleanor McEvoy.

Eleanor McEvoy’s music has evolved and developed over her career maintaining a serene confident statement that she is the master of her craft. As a globally acclaimed and much celebrated songwriter and composer, her music has been used in US, International and Irish TV and film. She also is one of a very limited amount of Irish Artists to get into the US Top 10 Billboard Charts (Precious Little). She also wrote the winsome ‘Only A Woman’s Heart’, which appeared on the massively popular album “A Woman’s Heart”. Eleanor also performed with the National Symphony Orchestra as a violinist for 4 years and is delighted that The NCH will be holding the Portrait on view in the John Field room for the next few years.

 The Prodigy are proud to present the next instalment of their ‘Warrior’s Dance Festival’ at Kalemegdan Fortess in Belgrade on September 15^th 2012.

Following the success of the inaugural event at Makuhari Messe, Tokyo, back in 2009 to the dizzy heights and rave reviews of 2010’s 65,000 capacity extravaganza at Milton Keynes Bowl, UK, the foundations have firmly been set to take the experience to Eastern Europe and to raise the bar once more for the Serbian people.

Underworld Release “A Collection” and “1992-2012 Anthology” : Irish Rel date Fri 20th January

Underworld begins a hectic 2012 by announcing the release of two career spanning compilation albums in January.

Firstly, ‘A Collection’ is a single disc set which features edited highlights of the band’s 20-year career. ‘A Collection’ features radio versions of many of the band’s best known tracks alongside recent collaborations with High Contrast & Tiesto (‘The First Note is Silent’), Mark Knight & D. Ramirez (‘Downpipe’) and Brian Eno (‘Beebop Hurry’).

Cooking Vinyl has signed Coventry-based three-piece The Enemy, ahead of the release of the band’s third album in the Spring.

Previously signed to Warners, the band first came to attention with their Platinum-selling debut album We’ll Live and Die In These Towns in 2007, and the Top three Gold-selling follow-up Music For The People from 2009. They join Cooking Vinyl on a royalty deal for the world release of their third album, scheduled for May 2012.

The band, lead by Tom Clarke, begin work on their third album this month at Kore studios in Acton with The Bronx’s Joby J. Ford in the producer’s chair. A hugely popular live act, they supported Oasis on their final UK dates and will be announcing live dates to coincide with the album’s release.

The Enemy are managed by Nick Ember and David Bianchi for Various Artists Management, whose roster includes Reverend & The Makers, Carl Barat, The Libertines, Charli XCX and Killing Joke.

Tom Clarke, Lead Singer/ Guitarist The Enemy was outspoken about the signing; “My experience of record labels is as follows: the big ones have got big lawyers who want to pull your pants down and fuck you for fun while telling you they’re doing you a favour.  And they are all about one thing – money.

“The smaller ones are about two things – people and music. Success is possible because, when a small team of enthusiastic people care, they are capable of creating something that no big label or their lawyers can buy, passion. You can’t take 25% of net passion.

A Woman’s Heart is a compilation of twelve tracks performed by six female Irish artists, namely Eleanor McEvoy, Mary Black, Dolores Keane, Sharon Shannon, Frances Black, and Maura O’Connell. The album was released in July 1992 and sold over 750,000 copies worldwide, more than any other Irish album in Irish history. A special concert has been anounced in The Olympia, Dublin, Ireland in February to mark the 20th Anniversary. Eleanor McEvoy has recently released her ninth studio album, Alone, which features 12 stripped-down solo tracks.

It is regarded as one of her most exquisite albums to date, showing off McEvoy’s style and panache as both a performer, songwriter and composer.

Joining Sir Terry Wogan in conversation this month, McEvoy spoke about her career to date, her latest album ‘Alone’ and also performed 2 songs ‘You’ll hear better songs than this’ and by request, she covered the well known Cyndi Lauper song ‘True Colours’.

Underworld announced as Music Directors for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) today announced that British electronic music pioneers Underworld have been appointed Music Directors for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The appointment completes the team of senior creatives that will lead the direction of the London 2012 Ceremonies.

Underworld duo Rick Smith and Karl Hyde will work alongside Oscar winning British filmmaker and producer Danny Boyle, Artistic Director of the Opening Ceremony and will be responsible for all the music in the three-hour ceremony taking place on 27 July next summer.

Underworld and Danny Boyle have enjoyed a long and diverse collaboration since Underworld’s track ‘Born Slippy’ featured in Boyle’s film ‘Trainspotting’. Over the following fifteen years the three developed a close relationship, with Smith and Hyde supplying specially created music for ‘A Life Less Ordinary’, ‘The Beach’ and co-scoring the 2007 sci-fi film ‘Sunshine’. In 2010 they came together again to work on the critically acclaimed National Theatre production of ‘Frankenstein’.

Danny Boyle said: ‘Appointing Underworld to direct the music in the Olympic Opening Ceremony is the final piece of the jigsaw for the team of leading British creatives who will deliver the ceremonies.

‘What’s interesting about working with them is how much broader their taste is than you might imagine. With ‘Frankenstein’ we really saw how far we could take a broader approach than we’d used together on the films.’

Rick Smith said: ‘The ‘Frankenstein’ project at the National Theatre was our opportunity to test ourselves as writers and music directors in a completely new environment – Danny asked us to take responsibility for every aspect of the sound and music and encouraged us to draw on a wide musical palette. It was a challenging piece of work with its roots in classic literature, that turned out to be the most fun I’ve ever had.’

Karl Hyde said: ‘We want to leave people with a musical memory of the show rather than a purely visual one. It’s a great honour to be asked to do this and one we’re taking very seriously – it’s certainly not something we’ll get the chance to do again.’

LOCOG has put in place a talented team of leading British creatives to lead the direction of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic ceremonies.

In May 2010 Stephen Daldry, Mark Fisher, Hamish Hamilton, and Catherine Ugwu, were appointed as Executive Producers across all four Ceremonies, and Danny Boyle, was appointed as Artistic Director for the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.

In February 2011 Take That’s creative director Kim Gavin was appointed Artistic Director for the Closing Ceremonies of both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. He was joined by multi-award-winning stage and costume designer Es Devlin and Bond film composer and record producer David Arnold as part of the Closing Ceremonies team.

In June 2011 Jenny Sealey MBE and Bradley Hemmings were appointed as Artistic Directors of the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Rick Smith and Karl Hyde are artists, composers, musicians and creative partners of thirty years. For the last two decades, the duo have established an international reputation as the pioneering British electronic music group, ‘Underworld’. They are also founder members of art and design collective ‘Tomato’. As Underworld they have released six studio albums and headlined festival stages around the world since their 1994 debut album ‘dubnobasswithmyheadman’. Their film credits include scores for Academy Award-winning directors Anthony Minghella and Danny Boyle. The pair’s theatre credits include scores for the National Theatre of Scotland’s ‘Beautiful Burnout’ and the National Theatre’s production of ‘Frankenstein’. Danny Boyle

Danny Boyle is a British filmmaker and producer. He is best known for his work on films such as Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Sunshine, 127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire. For the latter Boyle won numerous awards in 2008, including the Academy Award for Best Director. Boyle is also an experienced Theatre and Television maker. He began his career at the Joint Stock Theatre Company, before moving onto the Royal Court Theatre in 1982 where he directed Genius by Howard Brenton and Saved by Edward Bond. He also directed five productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 2010 he directed the critically acclaimed Frankenstein for the National Theatre. Boyle’s televison credits include, Alan Clarke’s Elephant before becoming a director on shows such as Arise And Go Now, For The Greater Good, Scout and three episodes of Inspector Morse. He was also responsible for the BBC2 series Mr. Wroe’s Virgins. Many of his films display a popularism and scale that are perfectly suited for the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games.  He is widely known to the general public, particularly since the phenomenal global success of Slumdog Millionaire. Originally from Manchester, he has lived in the East end of London for most of his adult life and is a passionate supporter of London 2012.

Taken from their latest album ‘All you need is now’, Duran Duran’s latest video is Girl Panic!, featuring the original supermodels: Naomi (Campbell), Helena (Christensen), Eva (Herzigova), Cindy (Crawford) and Yasmin (Le Bon) who make up the composite parts of the band, writhing around a plush hotel room, giving interviews all to what is a rather good tune. The Saw Doctors have teamed up with the iconic Petula Clark to record a version of that legendary chanteuse’s ‘Downtown’. The song has been a live favourite in Saw Doctors’ shows for the past year and when the band asked Petula to re-record the vocal to her 1965 classic she was happy to comply.

If we think back to the popular culture of music in the 1960’s, there are a few songs that come to mind which are as relevant today as they were back then.  This Christmas, Ireland’s most loved household band ‘The Saw Doctors’ release their cover version of “Downtown”, the sensational pop song composed by Tony Hatch which was recorded and made an International hit by Petula Clark. At the time of its release in 1965, ‘Downtown’ sold three million copies, hitting the No.1 slot in the US and becoming the first of fifteen consecutive Top 40 hits for Petula across the pond. Petula subsequently won a Grammy for “Best Rock & Roll Record” for Downtown and in 2003 her recording of Downtown was inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame. She is still the best-selling female British solo artist of all time.

The cover version of Downtown by The Saw Doctors (out on Dec 9^th 2011) features the wonderful voice of original singer Petula Clark. In the past year, The Saw Doctors blazed back phoenix-like to their rightful place as one of the nation’s most-loved bands. In 2010, after the first week of ‘The Further Adventures of….’ album being released, it knocked off mercury winners The XX and Villagers from the No.1 position on the Indie Charts by coming straight in at No. 1! (It also came in at a No. 7 position on the mainstream charts and maintained a Top 10 position for over 6 weeks).

The Saw Doctors hit the headlines last week in UK newspapers and TV when it emerged that they had written a song about the new Irish president-elect Michael D. Higgins as long ago as 1994. The song entitled ‘Michael D. Rocking in the Dail’ (Irish parliament) appeared on the b-side of their single ‘Small Bit Of Love’ and heralded the appointment of the then newly elected Irish Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht.
