POP WILL EAT ITSELF
25th Anniversary revival for ‘POP WILL EAT ITSELF’New album ‘New Noise Designed By A Sadist’ (COOKCD545) released Sept 30th on Cooking Vinyl
A new era dawns for iconic band Pop Will Eat Itself, with a revival by principal songwriter and co-frontman Graham Crabb. The inspiration behind the music was the challenge to create a classic PWEI album a full 25 years after the first EP release, that sounds more exciting and relevant than most of what is being produced in 2011. Says Graham; “It had been my desire to revive Pop Will Eat Itself for a number of years but there came a point when it was clear the original band members wouldn’t be committing to any future project in the band’s name. I saw this as a sad waste, as I felt I had armed myself with the best batch of songs I’ve ever written, and felt I still had a lot to prove. I would like nothing better than to elevate PWEI to a higher level than before. That might be ambitious but that’s the way I am.”
The new album ’New Noise Designed By A Sadist’ (COOKCD545), is set for release on Sept 30th on Cooking Vinyl, totally finished & mastered, having been mixed by Sulpher duo Monti & Rob Holliday (also guitarist with Prodigy, Marilyn Manson) .
Adds Graham, “I don’t want to make a big issue of the 25 years thing, but I think it’s funny, I was chaos & mayhem personified then, so I didn’t expect to be alive now, let alone writing my best PWEI songs to date.” Part of Graham’s burning drive is the belief that Pop Will Eat Itself were, in the recent words of DJ Tiga ‘chronically underrated’ and also a desire to emerge from the shadows of former PWEI buddy and now soundtrack maestro Clint Mansell. And with a full UK tour in July this year, he will achieve just that. “We’ll be performing some of Clint’s best songs with his blessing. The likes of Ich Bin Ein Auslander and Wise Up Sucker are awesome tunes that still stand proud and fit the PWEI blueprint of sonic assaults built on relentless grooves.”
With a string of Top 40 UK and US hits, Pop Will Eat Itself rose to prominence fuelled by Crabb-penned tunes such as ‘There Is No Love Between Us Anymore’, ‘Bulletproof’, ‘RSVP’, ‘Get The Girl, Kill The Baddies’ and many, many others.

BROOKE FRASER
NEW SINGLE: “BETTY” OUT NOW!! TAKEN FROM Debut Album: Flags (out now) – ‘Betty’ – BBC Radio 2 ‘Record of The Week’ + now on National playlists in Ireland including RTE2fm + out on iTunes now!
“A compelling darkness and intensity lurks under the surface of the best of these songs” – Uncut
“The precocious teen has blossomed into a mature artist” – Q
“This is an artist comfortable with her craft, confident of the direction it’s taking” – BBC
RTE & BBCRadio 2 favourite Brooke Fraser returns to Ireland this Autumn for an Academy Show Oct 9th after her sold out Dublin show earlier this year. Already a multi-platinum selling artist in her native New Zealand, Brooke has seen both her Irish singles enjoy phenomenal success at debut ‘Something in the Water’ spending months on radio playlists weeks on the A list. Meanwhile, the album from which they were taken, Flags, secured praise from Uncut and Q Magazine- no mean feat for a young artist making her UK & Irish debut with an entirely self-produced and self-written album.
This impressive response is just a reflection of the wider international success Brooke has garnered so far this year- her Something in The Water EP debuted at #1 in Germany and Austria, with the lead single achieving top ten radio play in Italy and Germany. Flags has established a firm bed of American support, with a top five iTunes chart debut and a sold-out 18 date tour earlier this year.A self-taught singer and songwriter from an early age, Brooke Fraser signed to Sony when she was eighteen, and released her first album in New Zealand in 2002. It debuted at number one, stayed in her native top ten for a year, and eventually went eight times platinum: an astonishing feat for an artist so young. Fraser went on to support the likes of David Bowie and John Mayer, before penning her second album, ‘Albertine’. This saw her success expand to America, where she toured extensively, entered the Billboard Top 100 chart and climbed to number five on the digital retailers’ US album chart.Still aged just 26, Brooke Fraser has made her third album in ‘Flags’, but it’s the first that she’s releasing in the UK & Ireland. It is very much the synthesis of the sounds and stories that got her to this point.
Fraser grew up in what she describes as a “less than affluent” part of Wellington, largely indifferent to the influx of musical imports from the rest of the world. Her home, however, was filled with seminal records by the likes of Carole King, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison. Unfortunately, her brother broke the vinyl player, so she grew up with them only in the visual sense. The revelatory moment came one afternoon when her friend’s mum was driving them to netball practice: James Taylor came on the radio, and Brooke suddenly put two and two together. It kick started an obsession with classic singers and songwriters that would feed into the music that she makes to this day.Brooke’s also used her considerable success as a platform for various charitable projects that she is passionate about. In 2005, she took a trip to Rwanda, 11 years after a genocide that claimed the lives of nearly one million people, and went on to partner with World Vision in sponsoring children and water projects in the region. For the release of ‘Something In The Water’, she aligned herself with a New York organisation called Charity Water, who have set out a rigorous plan to get clean water to everyone in the world within 40 years. Brooke’s ‘Birthday’ scheme (where fans are invited to leave money rather than giving presents) has already raised over $50,000 for the charity. More details on the organisation itself are available here: http://www.charitywater.org/

THE SUBWAYS
Release ‘Money and Celebrity’ (COOKCD549) on 16th September
Following the release of a free download last week via their website, THE SUBWAYS have announced the release date of their third album. ‘Money and Celebrity’ (COOKCD549) is released on 16th September 2011 on Cooking Vinyl and was recorded and produced by Stephen Street in London earlier this year.
The Welwyn Garden City trio (Billy Lunn – guitar/vocals, Charlotte Cooper – bass/vocals and Josh Morgan – drums) started playing in their local area in 2003 and, after beating 5000 applicants, they won a competition slot to play Glastonbury, they released their debut album ‘Young For Eternity’ in 2005. Quickly becoming festival favourites with their energetic and thrilling live shows, the band travelled the world before starting work on the follow up ‘All Or Nothing’ with producer Butch Vig. On it’s release in summer 2008 the band again hit all the Uk and European festivals consolidating their reputation as a dynamite live act. Finishing the album cyle in style with a show at Rock Am Ring Germany in front of a 75,000 strong crowd.
The Subways released the brand new song ‘It’s A Party’ on Thursday afternoon (16th June) via their website with no prior warning, and the track was downloaded over 1,000 times within the hour almost cashing their server. By yesterday over 10,000 copies were downloaded. An infectious pop-rock sound with killer hooks and sing along chorus the song is sure to sound even better when you’re bouncing around at a show. The 12 track album features music across the spectrum, melding their first album’s melodic immediacy with the second’s energetic rock power. As the title suggest, the songs were inspired by the overwhelming celebrity culture and also the financial crisis affecting the world today and how these things influence people.

Cerebral Ballzy
Release self-titled album: Cerebral Ballzy’ (COOKCD542) on July 29th
Brooklyn punkers Cerebral Ballzy have announced the release of their long awaited debut album of the same name on August 1st 2011 (July 29th in Ireland). The beer swilling pizza-junkies have been touring relentlessly in the US, UK and Europe with bands such as OFF! and Fucked Up, marking their territory with an unforgettable live show in preparation for the unleashing of ‘Cerebral Ballzy’ (COOKCD542).
The album was recorded in LA with Joby J Ford, the man behind fellow hardcore enthusiasts Trash Talk. It’s faster than amphetamine-fuelled lightning and proof that for Cerebral Ballzy, the band is a necessity. These guys are kicking the shit back into the New York punk scene so hard they could probably single-handedly re-open CBGB’s and they don’t waste any time on the album, blasting through 12 songs in 19 minutes.
Frontman Honor Titus sets the mood in ‘On the Run’; he introduces the album snarling “I don’t wanna be like them, I refuse to be like them. I find myself constantly confronted with their failures.” What follows is a blink and you’ll miss it insight into life in the forgotten corners of New York City, tales of broken bones and broken homes. Cerebral Ballzy are making a loud noise drenched in beer and puke that’s demanding your attention. Thing is, they don’t care whether you give it to them, they’re having too much fun to stop anyway.

THE BLACKOUT…
Album ‘HOPE’ (COOKCD537) Release 1ST April 2011 Single: Higher & Higher March 25th
+ IRISH DATES: Fri-Apr-1 Cork Ireland Cyprus Avenue Sat-Apr-2 Dublin Ireland Academy
Hope is the preserve of the foolish and the brave, the light at the end of the tunnel and the ball and chain that leaves reality inescapable.
‘Hope’, the new album by Welsh pop-bruisers The Blackout, is just that – except it sounds killer at ear-bleeding volume. The band are also are set to release their new single ‘Higher and Higher’ on March 25th. Fresh from playing a blinding set at the O2 Dublin supporting ‘My Chemical Romance’, THE BLACKOUT hit the road again at the end of the month for an Irish and UK tour with support from ‘The Swellers’ and ‘Hyro Da Hero’. Higher and Higher is a leap forward for them – still with the rock roots but with bigger hooks and US rapper Hyro Da Hero also appears on the track. The single, produced by Jason Perry has already been Zane Lowes Hottest Record In The World- so much so he played it twice in one night and this week it is Fearne Cotton’s Record Of The Week on Radio 1.
Having signed with Cooking Vinyl on a worldwide deal at the beginning of 2011 The Blackout are looking forward to leaping to the next level with a label that shares their independent-minded philosophy and which was enthusiastic about ‘Hope’ from the very beginning.
The progressive home to the likes of the Prodigy, Marilyn Manson, Does It Offend You Yeah? and Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, Cooking Vinyl have watched the band grow from small-town heroes to a global rock force. The label has a reputation for letting the artist call the shots, and considering the overwhelming response to The Blackout’s Pledge call it’s the perfect match for a band who are dedicated to their fans above all.
“We knew all the clichés about the difficult third album, but we never even spoke about it,” laughs Sean. “We got together at Gavin’s house and ran through the songs we had. Of the first 13 we wrote, we used 11. In our eyes, we were writing the hits from the very beginning!” Once the album was fully written, they recorded it in AIR Studio in London and Angelic Studio in Banbury, again with Jason Perry at the helm.
The Blackout are: Sean Smith (vocals), Gavin Butler (vocals), Matthew Davies (guitar), James Davies (guitar), Rhys Lewis, Gareth Lawrence (drums).

Poly Styrene
Title: Generation Indigo Label: Future Noise Music Release: March 25th 2011
At the end of 2010, Poly Styrene, the unforgettable frontwoman and iconic face of the seminal band X-ray Spex announced her return to the music scene with a free download of alternative festive anthem ‘Black Christmas’. Acting as a taster of Poly Styrene’s new material, the forthcoming album ‘Generation Indigo’ is due on March 28th through Future Noise Music and was produced by Youth (The Verve, Killing Joke, The Fireman, Edwyn Collins).
X-ray Spex may have only been around for a couple of years but their star shone brightly. Poly Styrene’s return is highly anticipated, she remains a genuine icon and one of the premier influences on the Riot Grrrl and Britpop scenes. Currently, a new set of young American bands like the Yeah Yeahs Yeahs and The Gossip and countless others recognise her fiery, irrepressible presence. With her great self-styled image, brilliantly sharp lyrics and powerful presence, Poly’s indomitable spirit still inspires.
After reforming the band for a one off show at The Roundhouse, Camden in 2008, Poly was persuaded to start writing a solo album. Armed with a record’s worth of songs, Poly met Youth who added his own epic style to the tracks.
The resulting LP kicks off with the mighty, power-pop of ‘I Luv Ur Sneakers’, and maintains the quick pace with forthcoming single ‘Virtual Boyfriend’ - out March 18th - before then moving into dubstep territories on the title track ‘Generation Indigo’. The album takes in everything from neo-X-ray Spex punk rock on ‘Thrash City’ and ‘L.U.V’ to the Trojan-reggae infused grooves of ‘No Rockefeller’, ‘Code Pink Dub’ and ‘Colour Blind’ whilst one of the stand out songs, ‘White Gold’ attests to the power of Poly’s soaring vocals.
The forward looking ‘Generation Indigo’ showcases Poly’s humorous musings on pop culture, the internet and fashion whilst also tackling heavier subject matter (war and racism) with her politically aware and intelligent lyrics. ‘Generation Indigo’ is a fantastic return to form for Poly and a welcome comeback for her fans. With her never-failing ability to connect with her audience regardless of the year and their age, Poly Styrene’s remarkable voice sounds as vibrant and innocent as ever.
Peter Bjorn And John….return to their pop roots
With the release their new studio album on March 25th, 2011 on Cooking Vinyl (March 28th in Uk)
Peter Bjorn And John are set to release a new full-length studio album on March 25th on Cooking Vinyl. For their sixth album the band chose to work with a producer for the first time ever enlisting the skills of Per Sunding at Tambourine Studios in Malmö. For a band that has always produced their own albums, this is a big move and when asked about the choice in a recent interview with SPIN.com John Eriksson said, “ ‘We needed someone who can make us play differently, someone to remember to back up the hard drive [laughs].’”
The new album, a follow up to 2009’s more experimental Living Thing release, is a definite return to Peter Bjorn And John’s pop roots. So the move to work with Per Sunding – a member of the now defunct Eggstone (a band that was once dubbed “the godfathers of Swedish pop”) seemed especially fitting. When SPIN.com asked Eriksson about the sound on the new album he said, “‘We originally planned to make a punk rock album, but listening to it now it’s definitely a pop rock album. But it sounds more punk rock when we play the songs live!’”
In the nearly two years since the band’s last album, Peter Bjorn And John have been very busy. Bjorn Yttling produced the new and wildly popular Lykke Li record –Wounded Rhymes, Peter Morén released his second solo album and his debut Swedish language album –I Spåren av Tåren, and John Eriksson released a new album – Favorite Flavor – with his disco-kraut band Holiday for Strings as well as three EPS with his solo project Hortlax Cobra. In addition, in January 2010 the entire band participated in an auction to help Haiti by submitting the bongos used on the recording of “Young Folks” along with Peter’s jacket that he wore when they performed with Depeche Mode at MSG in the summer of 2009.

BROOKE FRASER
Brooke Fraser Debut UK & IRISH Single: ‘Something In The Water’ due March 25TH + Album – ‘Flags’ – due April 08. + IRISH GIG ON the 9th April in The Sugar Club Dublin.
Platinum-selling New Zealander Brooke Fraser will release her debut UK single ‘Something In The Water’ on March 25TH, followed by the release of her debut UK album, ‘Flags’ on April 8TH. Having sold out London’s Scala in late 2010, Fraser has also announced a headline tour of the UK and Ireland, including the 9th April in The Sugar Club Dublin.
A self-taught singer and songwriter from an early age, Brooke Fraser signed to Sony when she was eighteen, and released her first album in New Zealand in 2002. It debuted at number one, stayed in her native top ten for a year, and eventually went eight times platinum: an astonishing feat for an artist so young. Fraser went on to support the likes of David Bowie and John Mayer, before penning her second album, ‘Albertine’. This saw her success expand to America, where she toured extensively, entered the Billboard Top 100 chart and climbed to number five on the digital retailers’ US album chart.
Still aged just 26, Brooke Fraser has made her third album in ‘Flags’, but it’s the first that she’s releasing in the UK. It is very much the synthesis of the sounds and stories that got her to this point. Fraser grew up in what she describes as a “less than affluent” part of Wellington, largely indifferent to the influx of musical imports from the rest of the world (Steps, S Club 7, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony etc). It kickstarted an obsession with classic singers and songwriters that would feed into the music that she makes to this day.
‘Flags’ is a contemporary and often-atmospheric take on the Laurel Canyon records Brooke loves, and was in fact written in Los Angeles, the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina and Northern California’s Bodega Bay. It’s all there in ‘Something In The Water’, an instantly-appealing and breezily upbeat number that is to become her first UK single. Elsewhere on the record, ‘Betty’ is about a cool, unapproachable girl who hides her Canadian-shaped birthmark (a thinly veiled metaphor for all the other things she is afraid to show people), while ‘Ice On Her Lashes’ is a meditation on the cycle of grief. The record’s gorgeous title track, meanwhile, finds Brooke at her most philosophical. “I was traversing these incredible landscapes,” she explains, “and wondering about all the people who had come to arrive in and then leave these places. One day this image of a flag popped into my mind. It seemed that our lives were like flags: a stake in the ground, marking our territory, but eventually our flag will wear out and return to the ground and someone else’s flag will replace our own.”

CAROSEL
CAROSEL; ‘Star EP’ Rel Jan 28th 2011
Catchy and instant, the music of bubbly pop duo ‘Carosel’ has a nicely retro charm and infectious feel good vibe to it. Michelle Phelan & Pete McGrane cherish melodies that linger in the mind. The lively rhythms and clear sounds of “Star,” “Something I Need,” “Easy” and “Take Me” are delicate and lighthearted like four soap bubbles that flutter. Think of Feist, Regina Spektor, Dionne Warwick or Lily Allen. (But Lily Allen without the sarcasm). The glamorous duo believes in the feeling of love and sings in the vein of entertainment!
Michelle Phelan & Pete McGrane are Irish, and history recalls that the duo formed ‘on stage’ in front of many witnesses. While Michelle attended a concert where Pete was performing, she was asked to join him on stage, for an impromptu rendition of the Al Green classic “Let’s Stay Together”.There was a magical catalysis and the audience was captivated, Carosel was born. Before this wonderful episode of fate, Michelle – from a small town south of Dublin – has much to dream of while listening to Burt Bacharach, The Carpenters and The Beatles on the jukebox in the dining room of the restaurant that her parents ran. As for Pete, a teenage rock bohemian, he discovered the guitar at school and went on to study classical and folk guitar styles. With the six-string slung over his shoulder, the years that followed took him to India and all over the world. Settling a while in Andalusia, he developed his guitar skills and harmonious melody that has nurtured Carosel’s beautiful arrangements.
Now based in Paris – “for inspiration, beauty and artistic vitality of the city” – Michelle & Pete maintain the flame of the romantic pop duet. They are touring and working on finishing off their 2nd album (yet to be titled). Their new Ep STAR is release later this month on Jan 28th.

Official stream link here: Song for a Future Love- the Frank & Walters by GoodSeedPR
And so it ends, 2010. The Parson rode his bicycle with all the urgency of Spring, we got to Let It Out for those glorious two weeks of the Summer and The Clock ticked ominously as the Autumnal chill drifted in.

NICK HOWARD
Single// ‘FALLING FOR YOU’ out Nov 26th
FT. ‘The Pressure’ as used The Hills and Jersey Shore on MTV
There’s a little something special about Nick Howard. As an Award winning British Singer Songwriter, he produces a mild folk/pop sound that beckons toward a brave, new, post-emotional future. Quite evident in his latest Single release: ‘Falling For You’. He recently started work on a follow up LP with producer Marshal Altman, (Natasha Bedingfield and Matt Nathanson) and is set to release the first single ‘Falling For You’ on the 26th of November in Ireland.
Nick’s popularity in his native Europe has gained huge traction since touring there for the first time early in 2010 with ‘Boyce Avenue’, which has led to his own tour in February of 2011, a tour that will also include dates in France, Holland, Germany, Ireland and the UK. Hacienda Records / Essential Music are pleased to announce the long awaited full physical and online release of the debut Freebass album, “It’s A Beautiful Life” on Fri 17th September.
The collaborative project between the triumvirate of celebrated Mancunian bassists Peter “Hooky” Hook (Joy Division / New Order), Gary “Mani” Mounfield (The Stone Roses / Primal Scream), Andy “Rourkie” Rourke (The Smith) and lead singer Gary Briggs (Haven / Strays), the Freebass album finally arrives some five years after first being mooted by its bass guitar hero members.
Taking time to audition a succession of guest vocalists before appointing the emotively talented Gary Briggs as Freebass’ front man, Gary is considered by many the finest Manchester lead singer of the last decade. However while sessions with Gary progressed and Freebass’ sound became more and more honed, Andy Rourke moved to New York in 2009, but contributes to tracks on the album.
With a debut tranche of UK live dates in early June 2010 across major cities, Freebass played well received, eclectic sets of entirely new material to sold out, appreciative audiences, and passed up the crowd pleasing opportunity of visits to their extensive back catalogues. As Mani and Hooky aimiably traded bass licks and trademark lo slung bass-lines whilst exchanging an old pals routine of jokey insults, special praise was reserved for Gary’s presence as a lead singer as he confidently held his own centre stage.
The studio album, which brings together the seminal bassists of the seminal Mancunian groups of the last 30 years, originally developed from free-form sessions between Hooky, Mani and Rourkie which provided the open minded, expansive sound of Freebass. Deftly arch guitar work and wonderfully cascading bass lines permeate the album which serves to slyly re-interpret members’ styles and influences in an inventive engaging cocktail of Northern Soul, dub, Krautrock and more, paying homage to the past but not trading off it.
Adapting the illustrious members styles and decades of experience into an innovative and dramatic album “It’s A Beautiful Life” varies its mood throughout, throwing in lighter, delicate, more melodic numbers, “It’s Not Too Late”, “The Only One’s Alone” and “Secrets And Lies” offset against some anthemically brooding, darker-edged tracks, including “Plan B”, “Kill Switch Pt 101” and “Lady Violence” with rock-ier indie tracks such as “She Said” and “The God Machine” rounding off the original album.
This Double CD release comes with three extra exclusive tracks which will only be released on this edition, “Bury Me Standing”, “Sister Surrender”, and “Believer” and contains a second CD which features instrumental versions of all tracks.

GET CAPE.WEAR CAPE.FLY
SELF TITLED ALBUM ON SEPT 10TH 2010 + Single Collapsing Cities out Now.
On Sept 10th 2010 Get Cape.Wear Cape. Fly., will be releasing their new self titled album on Cooking Vinyl Records on CD, Digital Download and a special iTunes version.
Sam Duckworth is Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly., the Southend-born troubadour who surfed the Top Thirty with his home-made 2006 debut album ‘The Chronicles Of A Bohemian Teenager’ (an album written and recorded on a self-discovery tour of the UK), hooked in Kate Nash and Billy Bragg to guest on the similarly successful 2008 follow up ‘Searching For The Hows And Whys’ (co-produced with Nitin Sawhney), became a leading figure in the political pop scene (a pub run-in with the BNP prompted Sam to become heavily involved with the Love Music Hate Racism campaign) and was part of the new wave of modern folk heroes that’s brought us Jamie T and Jack Penate. He also spent time at SXSW earlier this year working with Billy Bragg on the ‘Jail Guitar Doors’ project.
Now Sam is ready to release his third album, entitled “Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.” Written and recorded over 2 years at his Hoxton base and Brixton’s Dairy Studios alongside co-producer Dean James, He built tracks around basic acoustic melodies, and added reams of electronic layers that saw the tunes spiral off in ever more elaborate and exotic directions, inspired by a new love for hip-hop and a rediscovered passion for drum’n’bass.
The record that emerged is the point where Sam dons the cape and truly flies. It’s as imaginative, broad of genre and adventurous as the best of MIA, taking in big beat hits (‘Collapsing Cities’, a collaboration with Shy FX), Swedish pop bangers (‘Nightlife’: “I wanted to do a cruise ship crooner song that’s so cheesy that it’s almost unbearable. And then to tip it over the edge, put a really old school hip-hop beat underneath it and a swing to the beat that matches the swing of a crooner”) ‘All Of This Is Yours’ which shuffles marvellously along like Gorillaz’ ‘Clint Eastwood’ and features vocals from Baaba Maal, this album is an elasticated world music wonder
Embedded in this record are an abundance of quasi-political themes, ideas and concerns and Sam expands on them at length: from the shedding of mankind’s global responsibility to attacks on the greed of the banking system, the unifying nature of poverty-stricken communities, the emancipating possibilities of the internet for China and Iran, the BNP losing every council seat in the election plus the power of the protesters in Kent who forced the closure of a planned power station in Kings North.
Full track listing is:
1. Hand Me Downs,
2. Collapsing Cities feat. Shy FX,
3. Nightlife,
4. All of This is yours feat. Baaba Maal ,
5. Queen For A Day ,
6. All Falls Down ,
7. Where Will you Stand ,
8. Stitch by Stitch,
9. The Uprising ,
10. The Plot
Positivity shines through the entire album; it’s a breakthrough record which is spilling over with invention, musical possibility and hooks.
THE CHARLATANS
THE CHARLATANS: NEW ALBUM ‘WHO WE TOUCH’ (COOKCD527) RELEASED 03/09/10
RADIO SINGLE: ‘Love Is Ending’ is released on July 30th.
ALBUM: ‘Who We Touch’ is released on September 3rd.
With a career that has already spanned two decades, The Charlatans – Martin Blunt (bass), Jon Brookes (drums), Tim Burgess (vocals), Mark Collins (guitar) and Tony Rogers(keyboards) - release their new album ‘Who We Touch’, on September 3rd 2010.
Their eleventh studio album, ‘Who We Touch’ was produced by Youth (Paul McCartney, Primal Scream and The Verve) and was recorded at Britannia Row in London, on the desk that New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’ was recorded on. Featuring eleven tracks, the album must surely rank as their boldest to date radically broadening, in places, their aesthetic remit. It is, says Burgess,“a soulful voyage”, a journey through moods uplifting and profound, dark and delirious, ultimately concluding in blissful optimism. Its sound is inspired by many heroes, yet always sounds like no-one other than The Charlatans themselves.
Opener, ‘Love Is Ending’, is the first single to be taken from the album, released on August 2nd. ‘Oh!’ is a beautiful song of reconciliation, as complex as its shifting time signatures (one section is in 3/4 waltz time), and then ‘You Can Swim’, an exquisite ooze of ambience, reminiscent of ‘Another Green World’-era Eno, with whose creative ideas the album began. Lurking at the end of the album is hidden track ‘I Sing The Body Eclectic’ featuring Crass’s Penny Rimbauld on vocals. Gee Vaucher who did the iconic artwork for all of Crass’s releases, also provides ‘Who We Touch’ with it’s eerie collaged cover image.
The full tracklisting is;
‘Love Is Ending’, ‘My foolish Pride’, ‘Your Pure Soul’, ‘Smash The System’, ‘Intimacy’, ‘Sincerity’, ‘Trust In Desire’, ‘When I Wonder’, ‘Oh!’, ‘You Can Swim’
