‘examining the relationship between design and music’

examining the relationship between design and music’. http://bit.ly/anGEkD a great article.

excerpt:

This series of articles aims to examine the relationship between design and music. How does one compliment the other? How do different designers solve the various creative problems of this discipline? What makes a successful (if not iconic) solution for music design? And how do creative partnerships in this field operate?

I can think of few more important, successful and inspiring case studies for this series than the creative partnership between Underworld and Tomato – which spans two decades, six studio albums, countless tours and side projects, a number of changes in personnel and numerous shifts in visual and musical style.

Throughout all this change, three players have remained at the core of the partnership and continue to work together today – Underworld’s Karl Hyde and Rick Smith (who have recorded together in various incarnations since 1980) and Tomato’s John Warwicker, who is an artist, designer, writer and conceptualist.

The work of John Warwicker and the music of Underworld have both played a massive part in the development of my own work, so I feel extremely privileged to have been able to speak with John about his relationship with the band, his process and how the visual identity of Underworld has evolved over the past 20 years.

I began my conversation with John by asking about how the dynamic between Tomato and Underworld has changed over time, how work is structured between the two and if any creative conflict exists within the partnership today...

A version of Eleanor’s song Little Look, from her 7th album Out There, was recorded, with a video, in Poland with ‘Banana Boat’ an a cappella group from Poland. Eleanor sings lead while Banana Boat provides the rest of the sounds, a cappella.

The video was in the 2009 US a cappella Top 30 charts for over 7 weeks.

The good news about this version of the song is that Little Look was recently awarded “Collaboration of the Year with an Artist from Outside Poland” in the 2009 Polish Friends of Music Awards and “Folk Song of the year”.

Gig announcement: Underworld: RDS Saturday November 27th

by admin on September 6, 2010 in with no comments

The great news is not only is Underworld’s new album ‘Barking’ set for release September 10th 2010, but they are also going to be playing in the RDS in November!

Barking is the title of Underworld’s first album in three years, and their first to be constructed with a brilliant cast of co-conspirators. All the tracks were written by the band in their Essex studio before being given to handpicked studio heads from across the whole spectrum of dance music to add some of their style and creativity to the band’s raw material. The result is a pimped-up Underworld record and their finest collection of songs in over a decade.

From the first undulating pulses of submariner bass, the first vocals – soft like a whisper in the ear – and the first fizz of hi-hats that force along the pace, the sound is unmistakably Underworld. Electronics wrapped effortlessly around songs; streams of consciousness lyrics that form indelible images; a perfectly balanced mix of melody and rhythm. Underworld’s sixth studio album is a thundering return to form.

Tickets are: €39.50 (Incl Booking Fee) available from Ticketmaster outlets nationwide from Fri 10th of Sept.

this is epic

ENJOY (O:

EDITH PIAF;AT CARNEGIE HALL 1957

by admin on August 30, 2010 in with no comments

WE  are very pleased to announce the release of :

EDITH PIAF: AT CARNEGIE HALL 1957

RELEASE SEPT 10TH (FUTURE NOISE)

For the First time on CD, this release includes extensive biographical notes and track-by-track commentary by Spencer Leigh, acclaimed BBC radio presenter and journalist. Unusually for concert recordings, it features Piaf speaking and singing in English on occasion.

There is a memorable photograph of Edith Piaf performing at Carnegie Hall in January 1957. She is a tiny figure, not five foot tall and perhaps seven stone, wearing a simple, dark dress on a vast stage and we can see hundreds of people intently watching her. Her records were great, still are, but it was on stage that she truly revealed her compelling personality. Piaf’s concert at the Manhattan venue was a triumph on a par with her famed concerts at the Paris Olympia. She was working with her regular conductor, Robert Chauvigny, and Piaf could choose from over 100 of his arrangements for orchestra and choir.

Sometimes intentionally, sometimes accidentally, her songs often reflected the tragedies in her life and Piaf poured her feelings into them. No other performer, not even Billie Holiday, Judy Garland or Shirley Bassey, has performed with such intensity. You can appreciate the feelings in her songs even if you don’t know the language, but for this concert Piaf speaks and sings in English on occasion, making this album (first released in 1977) one that is particularly cherished by her many fans worldwide. Now, for the first time, the entire album can be purchased on CD

by admin on August 30, 2010 in with no comments

Hello there fellow music lover, BEFORE WE SAY HELLO TO SEPTEMBER: here’s a look back at our August releases::

OUT NOW>>>>>

Underworld: Single ‘Always Loved a Film’: taken from brand new album ‘Barking’ (set for release September 10th 2010).

“A joyous return to form” – Q, July 2010

“Hottest Record in the World Right Now” – Zane Lowe, July 2010

‘Always Loved A Film’ is the first full single to be taken from Underworld’s dazzling new album, ‘Barking’. Given a global premier by Pete Tong on Radio 1, followed by a “Hottest Record in the World Right Now” from Zane Lowe, ‘Always Loved A Film’ is a collaboration between Underworld and techno producers Mark Knight and D. Ramirez, resulting in seven ecstatic minutes of pressure-cooked euphoria. Remixes include Solo’s percussive work out, Michael Woods’ deep and dubby epic, Breakage’s stripped back, minimalist version and DJ Madskillz’s bouncy dutch house. Following on from a barn-storming headline performance at The Roundhouse on a balmy July evening – as part of the iTunes festival – Underworld return triumphantly with their first new album in almost 3 years this September.

JOHN, SHELLY & THE CREATURES: Single: ‘FOOLS’ + bonus track ‘THE FIRST MOVE’. ‘FOOLS’ is a defiant twist of the multi faceted musical dimension of Belfast city’s: John, Shelly & the Creatures. Formed after a chance meeting they had in a bar in Berlin with two homeless Irish twins named ‘John and Shelly’…this Belfast foursome have been receiving critical acclaim upon the release of their debut Dinosaur earlier this year. With a list of new gig dates here, this band will continue to earn new fans and surprise old ones.

‘BRILLIANT..  Dazzling’ (Irish Independent)

‘Sublime’ (Irish Mirror),

“Effortlessly monumental’ (AU)…& destined for greatness…

“an exceptional grasp of texture, tone and theme. A shoe-in for next year’s Choice Music Prize nominations list?” ( Irish Times )

****HOTPRESS

One year is becoming hard to sustain for modern bands trying their hand in the music business nowadays, so it is that little bit more impressive to know that in the past 20 years The Saw Doctorshave emerged as the most successful Irish rock band since U2. With a list of Chart success on numerous songs over the years such as well known favourites: “N17”, “I Useta Lover”, and more recently a cover of SUGABABES “About You Now”, (note that The Sugababes’ original version of About You Now stalled at No. 2 in the Irish Chart while The Saw Doctors reached No. 1!) plus many more, have helped The Saw Doctors maintain their defiant musical stance on the scene.

"Since we hired Good Seed PR we have seen a dramatic increase in the amount of PR we’re getting for our artists in Ireland. The service and reporting we’re getting from Linda is spot on. She’s helpful, professional and on the ball, and our artists love her. I’m not sure I should be saying this, as she’s so good, I don’t really want to share…" - Anette Collins Head of International– Cooking Vinyl Records
