JAMES RETURN TO WATERFORD AFTER 30 YEARS

On 14 November 1984, Waterford experienced it’s first proper rock gig when the all-conquering Smiths played The Savoy with support from the hotly tipped James and local heroes, The Village. Thirty years later in 2014, James return to Waterford to play at Daytripper on Sunday, 6 July, after 3 decades of global success.  The Manchester band’s enduring creativity and musical legacy has made them one of the most influential British indie bands ever as well as one of the most successful, having sold 13 million albums worldwide. James’ biggest hits include Sit Down, She’s A Star, Laid and Getting Away With It (All Messed Up), with an impressive 20 Top 40 singles in the UK under their belt. ‘Sit Down’ was the biggest selling song in the UK in 1991 and the subsequent tour saw James sell out a 15,000 capacity GMEX homecoming show, with the little known Radiohead as support.

In fact it’s in the live arena that James particularly excel. Over the years they have headlined and played high profile sets at many of the world’s biggest festivals like Glastonbury, Reading, Coachella, Lollapolloza, Rock In Rio, Isle of Wight, V Festival and T in The Park. They still play arena level shows throughout the UK, Europe and USA with an ever evolving set list drawn from 12 great studio albums. Having spent most of 2013 in the studio with Max Dingel (Killers, Muse, White Lies), James’s new album “La Petite Mort” is set to be released in Ireland on 30 May 2014 through new partners BMG/Cooking Vinyl, before a busy calendar of live festival shows globally for the summer, including Daytripper in Waterford.

Polish-Canadian artist Magda Zak announces first Irish solo exhibition on March 22nd in Dublin

DSCF8227[1]Polish-Canadian artist Magda Zak announces details of her first Irish solo exhibition ‘Zemsta’. Taking its title from the Polish word for “revenge”, Magda Zak’s collection leap-frogs from captivating portraits through expert life drawings to evocative abstracts, showing the depth, breadth and skill of this remarkable emerging artist.

Zemsta’ – A new exhibition of paintings by Magda Zak
Date:
 March 22nd, 2014.
Location: Cobalt Café, 16 North Great George’s Street, Dublin 1 @ 7pm

Polish-born, Toronto-raised Magda moved to Dublin in 2013 to work full-time as an artist, having fallen for the city during a visit here five years ago. Living in Temple Bar and with a studio in Christchurch, she has immersed herself in her surroundings in preparation for this, her first major Irish exhibition.

Magda won the first-ever scholarship to the prestigious Academy of Realist Art in Toronto, but until that point she was self-taught and proudly uninhibited by formal training. Her art walks a path of its own, but nonetheless shows scrupulous attention to detail and skill, from painstakingly detailed portraiture to dreamy abstracts. Zemsta is a mosaic of Magda’s work from the past four years, on display in Ireland for the first time.

She says, “The show is a compilation of the trials and errors of the past four years, since I decided to give art ‘another go’, therefore it’s more eclectic in nature rather than themed. For me, it’s all about experimentation, while retaining a certain edge and darkness.”

Magda has exhibited in a number of small galleries in Toronto. Her abstract piece ‘Wind’ appears on the cover of Dublin band The Pale’s 2011 album, I Woke Up and I Was Gone. She acted as art director for the forthcoming Canadian film La Beau Risque, which also features her work.
