SUZANNE VEGA

TO RELEASE HER FIRST NEW STUDIO ALBUM IN SEVEN YEARS

Tales from the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles

On January 31st 2014

+ Irish show announced: 20.02.2014  Dublin, The Olympia Theatre

Dec. 2, 2013 – One of music’s most prolific singer/songwriters, Suzanne Vega, has crafted a stunning new collection of songs that will take listeners on a sonic journey through her diverse influences.  Vega’s first new studio album in seven years, ‘Tales from the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles,’ will be released on Cooking Vinyl Records on Jan 31st 2014, featuring ten new songs each telling a story that has to do with the material world and the world of the spirit and how they intersect.  Suzanne spent the past few years writing and recording these new gems on the road, recording portions in Chicago, London, Prague, LA and New York City, and Kyserike Station, an old train station in upstate New York.  Tracking for the album took place mostly at the Clubhouse Studios in Rhinebeck, and the album was mixed by Kevin Killen, who has worked with Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush.

“A lot of my older albums, especially the second one, were about being solitary. This album has more of a sense of connectivity, there is a different spirit.”

Queen of Pentacles’ taps into Vega’s broad range of musical tastes,  intertwining Dylan/Stones inspired guitar-driven songs with lush orchestral strings and trumpet, soul-packed background vocals and Vega’s masterful classic folk elements.  A fan of hip hop as well, Vega samples the 50 Cent hit song “Candy Shop” for one of the more unique tracks on the album, “Don’t Uncork What You Can’t Contain.” This is Suzanne’s first sampling effort – although her song “Tom’s Diner” has been interpolated countless times in the hip-hop community, she has not sampled anyone else until this album

Produced by Gerry Leonard, David Bowie’s musical director for over a decade, ‘Queen of Pentacles’ features Suzanne’s longtime bass player Mike Visceglia and drummer Doug Yowell. For the first time on a studio recording, Suzanne has also assembled an illustrious group of musicians to accompany her including Gail Ann Dorsey and Zachary Alford (David Bowie) on bass and drums for several tracks-a happy reunion as Suzanne and Zachary attended the same elementary school back in the 70’s in New York City; bass player Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel) on the rhythm-heavy  “I Never Wear White” and “Don’t Uncork What You Can’t Contain;” drummer Jay Bellerose (T-Bone Burnett’s main go-to drummer); acoustic “wizard” Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan) who plays banjo, mandolin, and cymbal throughout the album; Sterling Campbell (David Bowie, B52s) on drums for “Don’t Uncork What You Can’t Contain” and “Laying on of Hands;” and Alison Balsom, the virtuoso principal trumpet for the London Chamber Orchestra who is featured on “Road Beyond This One (Horizon) for Vaclav Havel”.

The strings were recorded in the Czech Republic with the Smikov Chamber Orchestra. Finishing off with background vocals is powerhouse singer Catherine Russell known for her work with David Bowie and Paul Simon, among others.

The album will be released in four formats: CD, Vinyl, Standard Digital and an iTunes version with 2 bonus tracks.

1. Crack In The Wall

2. Fool’s Complaint

3. I Never Wear White

4. Portrait of the Knight of Wands

KILL KRINKLE CLUB announce EP & Single “SOFTEN REFLEX” out Dec 20th

KILL KRINKLE CLUB- EP & Single “SOFTEN REFLEX” out Dec 20th.KKC

*Taken from Album ‘Oxen of the Sun’

Soften Reflex is the latest single release taken from album Oxen of The Sun by pop duo / electro Irish/Swedish outfit KKC (Kill Krinkle Club). Justin Commins and Elina Bergman originally met by chance a few years ago in a Dublin bar. Commins had luckily won a coin toss that got him off his night job, thus allowing him to meet his future band mate. When it comes to songwriting, the duo describes the process as rubbing two sticks together to get a spark and fuel it until it becomes a fire. “We take turns being the spark and being the fuel,” Commins says. They try to let themes and ideas come about, never aiming for any specific concept beforehand. “We work in a very stream-of-consciousness way, just trying to get in that space where things flow naturally,” Bergman adds.

Their musicality has been described as ‘ear-bending inventiveness’ (State Magazine) with ‘dreamy electronica…. imaginative ideas and the abundant’ (Irish Times). The album was produced and mixed by Declan Gaffney (U2, Interpol) and Tom McFall (Bloc Party, REM, Stars) and mastered at Sterling.

The electronic dream-pop duo have brought their live show as far as New York (CMJ NY), Canada (NXNE Toronto, Halifax Pop Explosion CMW) & are regular crowd pleasers at Ireland’s much loved Electric Picnic Festival. They’ve shared the stage fellow luminaries such as Bat For Lashes, The Flaming Lips, MGMT & Efterklang. Their music encapsulates a kind of ‘cool’ akin to the taste of Calvin Klein, who had one of their songs soundtrack his 2012 New York catwalk show.

Their debut album Abandon received much acclaim & the bands follow up ‘Oxen Of The Sun’ (September 2013) is garnering similar accolades such as Album of the week on Rte 2Fm and is receiving plays on National stations Rte and BBC. ‘Soften Reflex’ is their latest offering to radio and features tracks 1. Soften Reflex, 2. By Choice and 3. Shoulder Blade. ‘A wonderfully beautiful, full of lush, staccato beats and vocals with power and soul’- Hotpress

‘The core sound of ambience, murky synthesizers and brooding vocals from both members are very much present, particularly on the album’s first few songs. ‘Fearless’ treads in to cinematic Clams Casino-esque territory with industrial hits and foreboding vocals’. – Nialler9

What’s with the name? Justin explains “There’s a scene in Taxi Driver where DeNiro talks to a Secret Service agent and gives the fake name Henry Krinkle. It always stuck with me. He’s a character on the edge, just about holding his sh*t together. I think Krinkle signifies the urge to be a respectable member of society, to do your job and keep your head down. While underneath it all there’s a sort of madness that comes from holding back our true nature.”
