MORE POWER TO YOUR ELBOW- Charity Christmas Single “Alive Alive O”

-Available to download now on iTunes-

All proceeds go towards The Irish Guide Dog Association (IGDA)

On the weekend of Nov 23rd Celtic Trad-rock power group More Power to Your Elbow launched their new charity Single “Alive Alive O” in Copper Face Jacks, Dublin’s premiere nightclub, in aid of The Irish Guide Dog Association (IGDA) in which all download proceeds will be going direct to the charity.

Resident dj Sean Daly Of Copper Face Jacks was the first to spin of the song on the night, and it will be a regular addition to his playlist every night, leading up to Christmas for this truly great cause.

“More Power to your Elbow” is a phrase used by the Irish to convey their typically energetic enthusiasm for a job well done. It’s a full-blooded endorsement, which asks for more of the same…you can never have too much of a good thing. As it happens, “More Power to your Elbow” is also a name aptly chosen by the members of an eight-piece Celtic Rock band from counties Tyrone, Armagh and Derry in the North of Ireland.

They could be variously defined, as a folk orchestra with a blazing array of electro-acoustic instruments or as full-on rockers, with driving drums and a dizzy rhythm and lead section. One thing is for sure, they will rattle your speakers because everything they do combines the inherent wizardry of Irish traditional with the musical muscle of rock.

More Power to Your Elbow are well known to home audiences and they have an appreciative fan base in areas as diverse as the USA, France and Norway.  To date the band have recorded two albums which have received critical acclaim.  The current album “Until the Last Note Fades” takes their music in new and exciting directions. Recorded by legendary producer Mudd Wallace, “Until the Last Note Fades” is a powerhouse fusion of Irish /Scottish style music with rock, reggae and other cosmopolitan forms. The end result is a tantalising journey through the quirky songwriting of Gerry Cunningham and the sophisticated arrangements, compositions and reworkings contributed by all eight of the band members. It is a delight to hear and you won’t be able to sit still!!

More Power to your Elbow intend to bring their refreshing and energetic style to the widest audience possible and the new Album “Until the Last Note Fades” is just the way to do it! It’s an intriguing catalogue of original songs and sets that capture the essence of the musical message about creating powerful energy around the delicate demands of a tradition handed down through many generations.

They crank it up and roll it out in a very original way. By no means are they to be seen as your standard Celtic Rock band.  Their arrangements and musicianship pay homage to the traditional art form with a great integrity, yet the material is fresh, energetic, highly enjoyable to listen to, but impossible to sit still to… you will want to jump!

Catch them if you get the chance……..you can never have too much of a good thing.

Frank Kelly of Father Ted fame to release “Collected Sketches” as digital singles over Christmas.

The wonderful Frank Kelly of Father Ted fame…. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Kelly has collected 32 clips (between 4-8mins in length) of audio comedy sketches which were originally broadcast as The Glenabbey Show on RTÉ radio in the 80’s. They were hugely popular and came before Dermot Morgan’s Scrap Saturday etc. Furthermore, we’re delighted to announce the release of these sketches as digital singles throughout Dec through to early Jan on the following schedule below.
Most recently best known for his part as Father Jack Hackett in the hugely successful Channel 4 comedy Father Ted, Frank Kelly has been at the forefront of broadcasting, comedy and TV, film and theatre acting for over 40 years. Frank made an impressive start to his film career, appearing as a prison officer in the opening sequence of the iconic Michael Caine movie The Italian Job (1969). In addition to starring in RTÉ children’s series Wanderley Wagon for nearly 14 years, Frank also wrote scripts for many episodes, sowing the seeds of his future stint as an award winning comedy writer on the current affairs satirical comedy programme “Hall’s Pictorial Weekly” running throughout the 70’s.

Frank wrote a parody Christmas song in 1982 which would become a career highlight and be fondly remembered forever more. The song was called “Christmas Countdown”, a sketch loosely based on the “12 Days of Christmas” carol. It would reach the top 10 of the Irish charts and the top 30 in the UK charts the following year. An album of the same name was released featuring the song plus sketches from Frank’s weekday RTÉ Radio programme, The Glen Abbey Show. In 2010 Frank was cast in ITV’s Emmerdale, one of the UK’s most popular soaps. His role concluded after a year on the show.

PAUL MELIA Single “MISS YOU” Out Dec 20th- Taken from Album “Hold Onto The Colours” Out now

Paul Melia – Miss You on MUZU.TV.

With ‘Lights in the sand’, the debut single from Paul Melia’s having racked up some considerable airplay within Irish and international radio waves over the Summer Months, his upcoming album Hold Onto The Colours has just been released. An exciting musically diverse singer songwriter and multi instrumentalist from Sligo, his debut defines how promising our local music scene is currently in Ireland. His natively flourished pop music at its very best has an incredibly addictive sing-a-long chorus with a glistening backing beat.

“New single ‘MISS YOU’ is one of the more stripped back tracks on the album, with its lingering intro and gradual build up… to its beautifully laden string section in the middle. It is a superb song that surprises and makes up for any doubt you may have on this multi faceted singer songwriter”- FUGM.

The album was recorded between Dublin and Sweden. Paul plays all the instruments on the album apart from the drums, which features the talented Johnny Boyle of The Frames, Pugwash & Picturehouse. The album features a diversity and range not seen since Duke Special boasting everything from pop, piano ballads, indie, rock and jazz. The album artwork was created by James Marsh, most famous for his work on the brilliant Talk Talk album sleeves.

Despite being at the moment a one-man band, Paul’s live show is an energetic journey through a range of genres that takes you from dancing to waving your lighters in the air. Paul has been lucky enough to take his brilliant live show everywhere from Electric Picnic to Whelans, The Sugar Club and The Grand Social.

Ryan Keen Irish Tour dates and New Single announced

Ryan Keen - Street cropALBUM “ROOM FOR LIGHT” OUT NOV 22ND

December Irish Tour dates: ( supporting Gavin James )

Dec 6th The Forum, Waterford, Ireland

SAT Dec 07 Dolans Warehouse, Limerick, Ireland

SUN Dec 08 Róisín Dubh, Galway, Ireland

TUE Dec 10 Black Box, Belfast, UK

THU Dec 12 Cyprus Avenue, Cork, Ireland

FRI Dec 13 Pepper Canister Church, Dublin, Ireland

On his new debut album, Room For Light – which was self-funded and recorded, largely in a small shed in his garden – Ryan explores the light and shade of life and love, with a series of songs that are remarkable for their subtly rich arrangements and his intimate style of playing and singing – you can hear him draw breath and feel the scrape of his fingers on the fretboard.

“I have much to say,” sings Ryan Keen on his track Orelia, and it’s true: he does have plenty to communicate, but then, he’s packed quite a lot into his first quarter-century. And now he’s coming to tell you his stories. The singer-songwriter with the warm, breathy voice, technically virtuosic guitar playing style and armful of confessional and/or observational material is about to become your favourite new bard.

The songs are quietly varied. Opening track and first single to Irish radio “Know About Me” showcases Ryan’s unusual guitar style and his husky, comforting baritone. Fans of artists from John Martyn to Ray Lamontagne will find much to enjoy here. The song increases in richness as it proceeds, the guitar enhanced by keyboards and strings. Skin And Bones is another fully arranged tune, almost Coldplay-ish, positioning Ryan less as a troubadour and more as a potential band frontman with arena appeal. You can imagine this being sung by big crowds in big venues. See Me Now opens with ambient electronic effects, and has a catchy, textured chorus. Old Scars marries a personal lyric with an infectious melody and a layered arrangement, with guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and backing vocals serving a song exploring memory and loss.

He was born in 1987, in Totnes, to a speech therapist mother and deep sea diver dad. Growing up, he listened to an eclectic mix of music: the seminal folk axis of Nick Drake, Bert Jansch and John Renbourn but also blues legends such as BB King and King’s most famous acolyte Eric Clapton as well as Buena Vista Social Club – he even had a hip hop phase. His all-time hero is John Lennon and he thinks the first two Coldplay albums are “genius”. And he’s heavily influenced by Spanish guitar – a travelling Flamenco guitarist turned up in Totnes one day and turned Ryan onto that style of playing. You can hear all of these influences, to a greater or lesser extent, in Ryan’s songs.

He studied Commercial Music at Westminster University with the intention of pursuing a career in the music industry, either in law or management – he did work experience at a Music Management Company, who looked after Zero 7 and David Holmes – when a couple of major events had the galvanising effect of turning his dream of an alternative future as a musician into a reality.

“I lost a friend in my final year at University,” explains Ryan. “He died suddenly from heart failure. He was fit and healthy and it came totally out of the blue. That really rattled me. But that’s what got me started as a singer-songwriter. I realised how fragile and short life is. I had been nervous and shy about performing but now I really wanted to do it. It struck a chord, the realisation that anyone can go at any time, so you might as well have a go.”

By 2013, Ryan was supporting Plan B at the iTunes festival and was the only unsigned act appearing on the whole month long bill. He also recorded a live EP and another called Back To The Ocean which featured a duet with Newton Faulkner called Reflections In The Water, which led to an invitation to join him on tour as his special guest. He embarked on his own headline tour and supported Leona Lewis, which saw him playing arenas as well as the Royal Albert Hall in London. After furious gigging – 260 shows in the last 14 months – Ryan has accrued a sizable fanbase. He’s been remixed by Modestep and made a cameo on a single by rapper Benny Banks. His Twitter followers include everyone from Ed Sheeran to Harry Styles and he’s got the crucial support of BBC Radio 1. He’s also collaborating with some of the scene’s key writers and producers: The Nexus (Lana Del Rey), Craze ‘n’ Hoax (Emeli Sandé), Fink (John Legend, Pro Green) and Dan Dare (Maverick Sabre, Wretch 32). Life couldn’t be better, even if his music is often deliciously sombre and downbeat, with lyrics torn from the pages of his diary and written as a form of therapy. Ryan Keen has good reason to look on the bright side.

SETH LAKEMAN announces NEW ALBUM, ‘WORD OF MOUTH’ to be RELEASED Jan 31st 2014

Seth Lakeman - Word Of Mouth COOKCD535SETH LAKEMAN’S NEW ALBUM, ‘WORD OF MOUTH’

RELEASED Jan 31st 2014

Recorded this summer in a studio set-up in a Cornish church, ‘Word Of Mouth’ is a defining album for Seth Lakeman’s storied career and for the landscape of British folk.

The album, released as a CD, LP and a limited special edition 2CD + DVD Bookpack* is the natural successor to 2011’s ‘Tales From the Barrel House’. It keeps the stripped-back storytelling but embellishes it with a denser, fuller version of Seth’s hauntingly melodic style.

Seth has bared his traditional folk roots more than ever before with ‘Word Of Mouth’. The sound is deeper and more dramatic than previous albums, in part owing to Seth’s recruitment of his live band:  As well as Ben Nicholls, Cormac Byrne, Lisbee Stainton and Sean Lakeman, guests on the album include Leon Hunt playing banjo on ‘Last Rider’, cellist India Bourne on ‘The Wanderer’ and ‘Lau’ accordion player Martin Green on ‘Tiger’. Ian Grimble, a veteran of Abbey Road studios whose CV includes The Manic Street Preachers, Beth Orton and Cat Stevens, produced and mixed the album.

Recorded in North Tamerton Church in East Cornwall and featuring the stories of the real people who inspired the album, ’Word of Mouth’ straddles the folk tradition Seth’s music is steeped in and the contemporary folk movement that he has become such a seminal figure of.

Kitty Jay’, Seth’s Mercury award-nominated second album, was recorded in his kitchen for £300. His last offering ‘Tales From the Barrel House’ was recorded partly in a copper mine. With those behind him, a church seems a natural choice for this album. As Seth explains, it’s about capturing the sound of the room, a much-forgotten part of the recording process, “I enjoyed the honesty and edginess of that, the instruments, certainly wooden instruments, breathe a bit more.”

“It is the complete opposite to building a record in the studio. Sometimes just singing some of the lyrics, looking up at the stained glass window – it was a powerful, emotional feeling, I think it adds to the passion. You can hear the birds, something could be tuned here or there but there’s no autotune, reverb or effects added – just the church.”

The second CD in the limited edition Bookpack contains interviews with the real life protagonists of the album’s stories. These include a long-serving railway worker (‘The Last Rider’), a dock working veteran of 40 years (‘Another Long Night’), a travelling couple who have put down roots but still long for their old life on the road (‘The Wanderer’), a man carrying a troubled memory of World War 2 (‘Tiger’) and those who annually honour the Tolpuddle Martyrs struggle for workers rights (‘Each Man’).

As well as tying him to the folk tradition of telling the stories of ordinary people, Seth hopes these interviews open up the artistic process. “It’s really just a fascination with people – being socially aware of the community where you’re from. [After] each of these interviews I’d go away and unpick and unravel it, obviously there’s artistic license but the interview becomes the bedrock for the song.

Seth Lakeman has been at the forefront of the re-emergence of British folk, its escape from the dark shadow of bearded men in Fair Isle jumpers into a new light for energetic, heartfelt musicians and a rediscovered respect for acoustic music. ‘Word Of Mouth’ shows Seth continuing to lead the way.

‘Word of Mouth’ will be released Jan 31st 2014 on Cooking Vinyl Records.

*The limited special edition Bookpack includes the CD of the album, a second CD which has 3 bonus tracks and 9 interviews, a DVD which includes the Making Of the album, and a 24 page booklet containing exclusive photos and lyrics.
