ALBUM: “BIOGRAPHY” RELEASE DATE: NOV 1ST

+ BOOK “Horslips – Tall Tales: The Official Biography” by Mark Cunningham. Published in hardback by The O’Brien Press on 4th November 2013, price €24.99

Regarded as the ‘founding fathers of Celtic rock’, Horslips announce the release of their album ‘Biography’ (Nov 1st) and book “Horslips – Tall Tales: The Official Biography” (Nov 4th on O’Brien press). Biography is an accumulation of songs that established them as one of the greatest and most important bands ever to come out of Ireland. Precisely 40 years on from the release of The Táin, Biography is a new 23-track double-CD release that compiles for the first time a complete set of the A and B sides of Horslips’ entire UK single release catalogue.

This unique package includes original 45rpm remixes and edits never previously available on CD. Also appearing for the first time on CD are ‘Bridge From Heart To Heart’ (a highly sought-after outtake from the Aliens album sessions) and the band’s rousing version of Johnny & The Hurricanes’ 1959 instrumental hit, ‘Red River Rock’ (recorded live in Cleveland, Ohio in 1978).

Founded in 1970, Horslips released 12 genre-defining albums and toured relentlessly throughout Ireland, the UK, Europe and North America over their original 10 year career. Back home, Eamon Carr, Barry Devlin, Johnny Fean, Jim Lockhart and Charles O’Connor took provincial Irish dancehalls by storm, creating a new rock music circuit and infusing the country’s disenfranchised youth with a new sense of cultural pride. In doing so, they paved the way for a new generation of bands, including The Undertones, The Radiators From Space and U2.

‘The longest tea break in rock ’n’ roll’ preceded Horslips’ surprise live reunion at the opening of the ‘History of Horslips’ exhibition in Derry in 2004. At the time, however, there was no indication of the full-on comeback that was to follow five years later. Since then they have been wowing fans, old and new, with triumphant arena, theatre and festival appearances, and epic performances with symphony orchestras.

With ‘Horslips – Tall Tales: The Official Biography by Mark Cunningham (O’Brien Press) we see the long-awaited, first-ever book dedicated to the history of Horslips; where they tell their story in their own words – the tours, the songs, the recording sessions, the heartbreaking split and the triumphant comeback. Featuring a wealth of rare photographs and memorabilia including album art, handwritten lyrics, set lists, session notes, concert posters and tickets from the personal collections of the band members and their fans, this is the definitive history of a truly legendary band.

The Hot Sprockets confirmed to perform on The Late Late Show on National TV Fri 20th of Sept.

Screenshot_18_06_2013_15_40The Hot Sprockets released their staggeringly cool country alt rocking Single ‘SOUL BROTHER’ to National acclaim. From being awarded Track of the week on Dublins 98 Fm to Single of the week on Today FM, The Hot Sprockets are winning over new fans at every roll of the dice. Hailing from the delta blues mecca that is…Dublin. They are five friends who came together with a shared love of Rock N’ Roll music. They have just announced that they will be playing this coming Friday on Rte’s The Late Late Show on National TV. (Fri 20th of Sept.)

A phenomenal live band, recent years has seen these smart blues-rockers play over 200 gigs including support slots with The Zutons, The View, Divine Comedy, Ida Maria, Peter Hook, Republic of Loose, BP Fallon and a rake of festivals including Indie-Pendence, Castlepalooza, Sea Sessions, Vantastival, Arthurs Day, Mannifest, Electric Picnic, a sold out show at The Roundhouse in London and headlining Whelans “One to Watch” festival.

Their music has been used on everything from Bulmers ad campaigns to BBC’s comedy “Fresh”, Irish film “Stitches” and RTE’s “RAW”. The band recently beat off 1000’s of bands to make it to the Hotpress “Play on the Day” final and got to grace the cover of Hotpress magazine. The bands video for “Cruisin’” was nominated for “Best video” & “Best group” at the Irish Music Television Awards.

The Hot Sprockets are living up to their early promise and stunning debut album (Honey Skippin’) by recording a mighty (yet unnammed) second album which is described as an album “to be listened to in the spirit in which it was made”. This album was recorded in Grouse Lodge, Windmill lane & Orphan Studios, it was produced by Gavin Glass and mixed by Declan Gaffney(U2) & Dougal Lott(Ray Davies) (release dat etbc).

Their kind of Rock N’ Roll music is haunted by the ghost of country and blues – take the good-time revolutionary spirit of MC5, simmer it down to the sounds of Crosby Stills Nash and Young, add some rough-edged Eagles of Death Metal and you are somewhere near the sonic nugget that is The Hot Sprockets.

SEETHER 2002-2013 (COOKCD598)- COLLECTION OF SEETHER FAVORITES INCLUDING THREE NEW TRACKS AND RARE B-SIDES WILL BE RELEASED OCTOBER 25th, 2013 (DIGITALLY) & NOVEMBER 1st (PHYSICALLY)

TRACK LISTING AND COVER ART REVEALED

SINGLE “SEETHER” (FRYDL639) AVAILABLE 27TH SEPTEMBER

Cooking Vinyl will release Seether 2002-2013 on October 25, 2013 – the two-disc, 27-song career retrospective includes Seether’s 11 #1 singles in the US, their greatest songs, three new tracks and rare b-sides.  The cover art (above) and complete track listing has been revealed (below).  The first single, “Seether,” will be available on the 27th September when the album becomes available to pre-order. ‘Seether’ is a cover of Veruca Salt’s 1994 hit song and also where the band got its name.  This is the first time Seether has covered and recorded the song.

“13 years ago when a demo of ‘Needles’ came roaring through our speakers and tearing down our hallways, we knew greatness was at our fingertips,” said Ed Vetri, President and CEO of Wind-up Records.  “Shaun’s powerful and emotional songwriting has continued to generate that raw passion and has developed into the unmistakable sound of ‘Seether.’  After an amazing young career featuring 11 number one songs, millions of albums sold, Seether is just hitting their stride and this Greatest Hits package only represents their work so far. We had the greatness 13 years ago, now we have the hits…In typical Seether fashion, they chose to cover the song where their name was born from, seems perfect for this occasion.”

Seether just finished playing a select number of U.S. shows this August but to celebrate their upcoming collection, Seether will embark on a unique semi-acoustic storytellers-type tour, “An Intimate Night With Seether” performing in intimate and iconic venues around the world, beginning November 5th at Union Chapel in London.  These special settings will provide Seether fans with the ultimate backdrop to experience seeing the band like never before, in some of the most beautiful venues in the world.

Seether has sold millions of albums and singles worldwide, has over 63 million YouTube views and are mainstays in the touring circuit averaging more than 275 performances per year. They have had 11 #1 singles and 17 Top 5 hits across multiple formats at radio.  Originally founded in Johannesburg, South Africa, by Shaun Morgan and Dale Stewart, Seether made its initial impact on U.S. hearts and eardrums with the Gold album Disclaimer (2002). The album’s first single, “Fine Again” was a pensive ballad that resonated with fans worldwide. Seether gained nationwide live exposure with a spot on that year’s Ozzfest tour.  Seether re-recorded the acoustic track “Broken” as an electric version featuring Evanescence vocalist Amy Lee. “Broken” became a massive international hit for the group. In 2004, Seether remixed and re-mastered Disclaimer, adding eight new songs and new cover art to create the two-disc set Disclaimer II, which is now Platinum. In 2005, Seether released Karma & Effect, which is certified Gold, approaching Platinum and followed that release up in 2006 with a live, acoustic CD/DVD, One Cold Night, which is now approaching Gold.  In 2007 Seether released the Platinum Finding Beauty In Negative Spaces. The album was reissued in 2009 with a cover of George Michael’s “Careless Whisper,” and became another Platinum single release for the band.  In 2011 Seether released Holding onto Strings Better Left to Fray.  That album is approaching Gold status.

Seether is Shaun Morgan (Vocals, Guitar), Dale Stewart (Bass, Vocals) and John Humphrey (Drums).

BILLY BRAGG announces: Life’s a Riot with Spy vs Spy (30th Anniversary Edition) CD

BILLY BRAGG

Life’s a Riot with Spy vs Spy (30th Anniversary Edition)

(COOKCD596)

Released October 18th, 2013 on Cooking Vinyl

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of his seminal 1983 debut recording  ‘Life’s a Riot with Spy vs Spy’, Billy Bragg will release a special edition on October 18th comprising the original album re-mastered, plus a new, live solo version by Billy recorded as a unique encore at his London Union Chapel show on Wednesday 5  June 2013. Life’s A Riot (30th Anniversary Edition) will feature a sleeve based on the original 1983 Barney Bubbles artwork and be available on CD, in a replica vinyl card sleeve with inner sleeve, limited edition LP with inner sleeve and lyrics on 180g vinyl with DL and digital.  In keeping with the ‘Pay No More Than £2.99’ slogan that appeared on the front of the original record sleeve, the album will be available at a special ‘Pay No More Than’ price from iTunes of £2.49 for the original 7 track re-mastered album and £3.49 for the 30th Anniversary Edition, which includes the live Union Chapel show encore, for pre-orders and during the first week of release.

Billy says “Life’s a Riot with Spy vs Spy has a very special place in my heart, being the first step on a 30 year journey that has seen me travel to places that I could never have imagined back in ’83. Also, as it’s only 17 minutes long, I can knock the whole album out as an encore if the fancy takes me – no need to book the Royal Albert Hall and the London Symphony Orchestra”

Earlier this year, Billy released his first new studio album in five years Tooth & Nail (Cooking Vinyl) to huge critical acclaim. Drawing on personal as well as political themes, Tooth & Nail was recorded over a whirlwind five-day session with Grammy Award winning producer Joe Henry and was summed up by Mojo magazine thus:  “Bard Of Barking, 56, gets personal, goes universal, makes his best album” (FIVE STARS).

Billy is touring through November and December and will be playing a milestone London show with his band at Hammersmith Apollo on Thursday 1 May 2014. He has asked that we point out that he’s only 55.

The Pale announce new LP ‘21 Song Salute’ Out Oct 18th

xx1cover Twenty-one years in the making, The Pale’s latest album is a milestone for the band: Twenty-one tracks representing the alternative history of a group who have furrowed their own distinctly independent path. 21 Song Salute is made up of previously unreleased and unheard material taken from sessions for six of the band’s ten albums.

‘These songs are the strays, stragglers and forgotten sidekicks’ explains lead singer and lyricist Matthew Devereux, ‘To qualify for inclusion on this record the songs had to be unreleased, underexploited or unused. Really this is less a compilation and more an overview of the band’s unreleased catalogue, cherry picking from material we were almost too shy to release.’

Compiling the album was a mammoth undertaking. Over a six month period, the group engaged with their Facebook and Soundcloud followers to get feedback on which tracks to include. Every Monday they previewed a candidate song for the record and looked for feedback from their audience. This gave them an opportunity to dust off the archives and re-assess material that might have otherwise been lost to posterity.

‘It’s an important record for us in that it was put together as a community record by our listeners. It’s nice to reward people who have been listening. I am hoping the record feels communal and that it was extracted out of us, rather than forced on them.’

The Pale know a thing or two about hidden histories. After initial chart success with the albums Here’s One We Made Earlier and Ripe and gaining massive acclaim as a live act in the early 1990s, The Pale (for various reasons) took a sharp turn off the beaten track, becoming a self-sufficient entity, continuously recording, but releasing sporadically.

‘We toured for a number of years under the name of Produkt. For a while we were the house band for an alternative circus. We put records out as fan-club exclusives or due to distribution deals, could only release them available in certain territories. It’s been said that we are one step out of kilter with the music industry’

THE PALE PRESS SHOT 1What spurred the band on is a commitment to the song-writing and recording process. During this period they recorded three albums, ‘Cheapside’, ‘Cripplegate’ and ‘Spudgun’. Fans of these albums may be disappointed that recordings from these sessions haven’t been included in this release. ‘The recordings haven’t aged quite as well as we would have hoped’ Devereux explains, ‘we are addressing that now and hope to have a proper release for these titles in the near future.’

The band re-emerged in the noughties, putting out the electronica infused collection Lonely Space Age and a trio of albums for Irish independent label 1969 Records, Contents of a Shipwreck, Proper Order and last year’s I Woke Up And I Was Gone. During this period they also recorded and shelved an entire album, the prophetically named Delete Me.

The band’s constant drive forward, always writing, always recording has meant that inevitably some songs didn’t make the final cut of an album, very often for reasons other than the quality of the song.

‘I think people are surprised at how much music we have produced‘ says Devereux. ‘For every album we recorded there were always songs that, for whatever reason didn’t quite fit. In a funny way the process of going back has allowed us to appreciate the eclecticism of what we do, but also how the various aspects of our music sit together. We have always had a consistent song-writing approach even though we put different backgrounds on our lyrical foregrounds. What is striking about this release is how well it all gels. In many ways this is the album we have been pushing to make all along.’

21 Song Salute is released on 1969 Records on the 4th of October.

A nationwide tour is being planned for the Autumn.

LOLA - Cover Draft 1Lola Bell Single: ‘Animalistic’

Out on iTunes- Oct 25th

Innovative artists and musicians thrive in the freewheeling milieu that a big city offers and over the last few years our own bustling Dublin has been an original platform from which the likes of The Script and Kodaline have launched their careers. Lola Bell, has spent a number of years honing in on her songwriting skills and she releases her debut single ‘Animalistic’ produced by Fergal Davis (The Republic Of Loose, Paddy Casey, The Coronas), which introduces a mega-catchy glistening pop track.

No stranger to the world of media, Lola’s first experience in the spotlight was on National radio at age 14 on the Gay Byrne RTÉ 1 radio show. Her likeability factor and vocal talent were such that her 10 minute slot got extended to 40 minutes, with Gay getting her to sing two songs live on air.

Lola has also worked as a session musician and backing vocalist at various TV and Award Shows (The MTV and Meteor Music Awards, RTÉ’s Miriam O’Callaghan Saturday Night show, The Late Late Show & The Hit). Including working alongside fellow luminaries the Sugababes, Pixie Lott and Billy Ocean.

This October sees the songstress finally step into her very own spotlight with her debut single ‘Animalistic’ – out Oct 25th.

Empire Circus announce headline Dublin show for album launch: Sept. 28th – The Grand Social, Dublin – Doors 8pm.

EC Brooklyn Pic 2Album “Empire Circus” Out Sept 20th

+ Gig Sept. 28th – The Grand Social, Dublin – Doors 8pm.

Empire Circus are a four piece Alt Pop outfit who have tapped into the panache of Two Door Cinema Club, the demeanour of Arcade Fire and the general cool suave of Gorillaz… then morphed out at the other side with a resonant sound under the guise of Empire Circus.

Having lived and played music full time in the USA together for 7 years, they returned to Ireland in 2008 opened a Music School in South County Dublin – www.puremusic.ie. Then in the spring & summer of 2012 the band spent time writing, demoing and working feverishly on creating music. They wrote some songs. Actually they wrote lots of songs. Some they really enjoyed playing, others… not so much. So they took the fun ones and went to a studio in Brooklyn and crafted an album of 12 tunes that made them want to sing, dance and get silly. This was all done under the influence of Producer/Engineer/Mixer; Bryce Goggin (Ramones, The Morning Glories, Antony and the Johnsons).

Their latest single “There is a Light” graced many an airwave over June and July and was awarded Song of the week on 98FM. Empire Circus’ sound is all about the thrill in rhythm and melody. Their debut album, including songs such as “A Day in the Life of a Superhero”, “I Know Better” and “All I Need” will assuredly leave you powerless against the urge to get up, get crazy, dance and sing like you never have before.

Band statement: The Future (the end is nowhere in sight): We still have dreams of conquering the world and selling the t-shirt, but for now we will be bringing dodgy dance moves and above all, music that electrifies the soul.

Empire Circus’ self-titled debut album is set to make an appearance September 2013. There Is A Light Single and EP is out now.

Turin Brakes Track of the day on Q

Name: Turin Brakes
Track name: Time And Money
Hometown: Balham, London
Who? Duo Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian.
Why now? This is the video premiere for new single Time And Money – taken from new album We Were Here out 30 September – which sees the pair taking on the money men. “The video was inspired by the idea that the banker, as far as much of our society is concerned, is the modern day bogey man – representing the cause of our current pain,” they explain. “So that in a way the death of a banker and his burial represents the death of an era of irresponsibility by the privileged against the best interests of the many. Hopefully to be replaced by a new mindset.. that of responsibility and care for the majority.” The band hit the road in October.
