JOHN SHEAHAN: A DUBLINER  : MONDAY APRIL 15th RTE ONE 9.35PM

John Sheahan(Colour)The documentary film John Sheahan: A Dubliner is a revealing and beautifully made portrait of a man who was an integral part of the national institution that is The Dubliners. As Barney McKenna once said, John is the ‘memory chip’, the part of the band who never forgets, ‘the mortar between the bricks’ that kept the band together.

John Sheahan was perhaps the most unlikely member of The Dubliners. His quiet nature and classical music training set him apart from his fellow group members. Now at the age of 73 he has reached a major turning point in his life. All of his friends that he once shared the band with in the early days, Luke, Ronnie, Ciarán and Barney are now sadly dead and he has finally decided to close the book on the life of The Dubliners after fifty years of recording and touring.

Sheahan is a deep thinker, a quality musician, composer and a poet with a passion for words.  At the age of 25 he was set up for life with a pensionable job as an ESB draftsman. He worked by day and played music by night. In 1964, to the dismay of his father who was a member of An Garda Síochána, he packed in the day job to go full time with The Dubliners.Image Ref. No. 2062/025

Now fifty years later it’s a new dawn for John.  He has all of the memories neatly packed away into different compartments and is ready to tell his side of The Dubliners story. John Sheahan is an eyewitness to a colourful chapter in Irish history that has formed a large part of our national identity. He has taken a road less travelled and thankfully has survived to tell the tale.

Produced by the award winning Scratch Films and directed by five time IFTA winning director Maurice Sweeney, John Sheahan: A Dubliner is a treasure trove of rare Dubliners archive some of which has never been broadcast in Ireland before and contemporary performances with Damien Dempsey, Declan O’Rourke, Charlie McGettigan, Máire Breatnach, Seán Keane and Neil Martin.

SENAKAH

ANNOUNCE ALBUM: HUMAN RELATIONS & DOUBLE A: START AGAIN & TRAINING WHEELS – OUT MAY 17TH + Irish tour dates announced

Senakah are a four-piece band comprising of Vocalist Rob Hope, bass-player Yvonne Conaty, drummer Daragh O’Loughlin and guitarist Brendan O’Gorman. Their music blends guitar laden melodic pop with modern rock. In 2008 the band released their debut album ‘Sweeter Than Bourbon’, which garnered an impressive amount of mutual nods of approval from the music industry in both Ireland and Europe. Including two Top 30 chart single releases (Smile & Clarity), Song of the week on National radio station RTE2FM and was awarded Track of the Day on Today FM.

Syncs also came in on MTV and Various TV Dramas on RTE for songs across the entire album. It wasn’t long before they were invited over to America to do 1 tour, which became almost 300 shows! Fast gathering word of mouth endorsements for their energetic live performances, the band began to sample new songs and gauge from crowd reaction what to place on the next album.

Firm with the notion that they had built up an adequate collection of new songs, the decision became clear to return to Ireland to record the new album. With the production skills of Noel Hogan (The Cranberries) the songs came to life. Recorded over the course of twenty-seven days in the former Bishop’s Palace in Limerick, the new album ‘Human Relations’ is a confident step forward in both songwriting and recording.

As always the bands agenda is that their music brings Senakah into the hearts and minds of the people. Human Relations will be released May 17th and will mark a paramount return to form from the band.

After making a glorious return with last year’s Top 10 album ‘Cheeky For A Reason’, which received numerous glowing reviews – some of the best of the band’s career so far – and also saw them winning Best Album 2012 at the Sunday Mail’s Great Scotland Awards and Album of the Year 2012 at The Scottish Music AwardsThe View have compiled some of their finest moments to date on the ‘Seven Year Setlist’ album which will be released on June 14th on Cooking Vinyl. The release of the album comes just days after they support the legendary Stone Roses in front of 50,000 people at Glasgow Green on June 15th.

“Over the years there’s been four studio albums, thousands of gigs, too much vodka and loads of memories on this crazy rock n’ roll journey,” says vocalist / guitarist Kyle Falconer. “So we wanted to create an album that was kinda like stopping and looking back over the years – with a few new tracks too. That’s the Seven Year Setlist.”

‘Seven Year Setlist’ spans The View’s journey to date from ‘Face For The Radio’ which originally featured on their self-titled debut EP which was released in 2006 up to the present day with two new songs in the shape of ‘Dirty Magazine’ and ‘Kill Kyle’. Along the way, it visits the #3 hit ‘Same Jeans’‘Wasted Little DJs’ which won Best Track at the NME Awards, another Top 15 hit with ‘Superstar Tradesman’, a Dirty Version of the ‘Which Bitch?’ album highlight ‘Shock Horror’ and ‘How Long’, the first single and opening track from ‘Cheeky For A Reason’ which was accompanied by a video starring Red Road / A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints actor Martin Compston.

The new material on the album reunites the band with Owen Morris (Oasis, The Verve) who produced their Mercury Prize-nominated, #1 album ‘Hats Off To The Buskers’. The majority of the songs on the album were written by Falconer and bassist Kieren Webster, and features further production courtesy of Mike Crossey (Artic Monkeys, Foals) and Youth (Primal Scream).

The full album tracklisting is:

  1. Kill Kyle

  3. Wasted little DJ’s

In addition to the Stone Roses show, The View’s summer touring plans encompass two intimate homecoming shows at Dundee’s 20 Rocks venue (May 9th and 10th), a headline set at the Mighty Boof At The Playground festival (May 17th) and a return to T in the Park in July.

Formed in Dundee in 2005 by four former school friends, The View have hit the charts with all four of their albums – ‘Hats Off To The Buskers’ (#1), ‘Which Bitch?’ (#3)‘Bread and Circuses’ (#14) and ‘Cheeky For A Reason’ (#9) – accumulated over 3.5 million views at YouTube and have excelled at numerous major festivals such as Glastonbury, Reading, Leeds, T in the Park and One Big Weekend. Highlights of their recent tours include headlining to almost 7000 people over three Scottish shows split between Dundee’s Caird Hall and Glasgow’s Barrowlands, as well as a raucous set at Rockness which was abandoned due to safety fears and upgraded to a bigger tent due to the phenomenal turnout from fans.
