Brendan Benson announces Irish Gig in Button Factory + new LP: What Kind Of World

Brendan Benson To release new album: What Kind Of World – Release date Fri April 27th (Ireland)

Album is also available to purchase on record store day.

+ Irish date May 24 – Dublin, Ireland – Button Factory!

As much as the story behind Brendan Benson’s fifth solo album is the story of making a record, it is also a story of finding a family — of love, marriage, the birth of a son, and of another kind of family too: one made up of all of the musicians, music-lovers and friends, who have helped to make these songs and build a label to carry them.

Over the years, Benson grew accustomed to doing things alone, releasing four solo albums to date, starting with 1996’s One Mississippi and followed by 2002’s Lapalco and 2005’s Alternative to Love. After a brief hiatus when he co-founded The Raconteurs and spent a few years touring and releasing two albums with them, he made a return to solo work with 2009’s My Old Familiar Friend. It was around this time that he also decided to relocate from Detroit to Nashville, a move that would set in motion events and relationships that would eventually form the backbone to his latest offering, What Kind of World (Lojinx, 2012). “Marriage and having a kid was the big thing,” Benson says of the years between this record and My Old Familiar Friend. Having welcomed his son, Declan, in the spring of 2010, the effect on his music was apparent: “I think it’s given me a whole new motivation, a new vigor,” he says. “If I was having a doubtful moment, I could think of Declan and think ‘I’m doing this for him.’”

The songs on What Kind of World reflect this new clarity. “I think on this record I’m saying a lot of things I never thought I would say,” says Benson. “Maybe I’m just getting older, but I don’t want to hide now in my songs, I just want to be truthful. And I’m realizing that the truth is really interesting — I’m more attracted to honesty these days than to convolution.” It’s a sentiment that surfaces and rings out on the album’s showstopper, “Bad For Me” — a dazzling, irresistible tale of a destructive kind of love. “Lyrically on this song, I’m going out on a limb,” Benson says. “I’m out of my comfort zone, and speaking really plainly. It’s a song where I realized the truth is far more compelling.” Many of these songs are a testament to the friendships Benson has cultivated in Nashville.

Musicians such as Jon Auer (The Posies, Big Star), Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, Big Star, REM), both of whom Benson met at a concert to honor Alex Chilton, as well as Brad Pemberton (Ryan Adam’s Cardinals), Mark Watrous (Loudermilk, Gosling), and Sam Farrar (Phantom Planet) are members of his newfound musical family who have contributed to the creation of Benson’s album.

The spur of inspiration came from elsewhere as well: songwriting collaborations with rising talent Young Hines and country singer Ashley Monroe (Pistol Annies), which eventually led to the creation of “Keep Me” and “Pretty Baby”, respectively. Another track, “Thru the Ceiling,” was written with local writer-producer Jay Joyce, and for “No One Else But You,” Benson tracked down a couple of horn players after a half-remembered conversation at a recent party.

Recorded at Welcome to 1979 in Nashville, engineered by Joe Costa and produced and mixed by Benson himself, What Kind of World will be released on Lojinx in the UK & Europe and on Benson’s own label, Readymade, in the US — a venture that has proved new and exciting while simultaneously restoring a little faith in the power of good people and good music.

The idea for the name of his label dates back to 1995, when Benson was newly signed to Virgin Records and putting out a limited edition EP. “I was doing the artwork, and I just stuck my own imaginary label on there — the name came from Marcel Duchamp, and his readymade objects.”

The creation of his own label not only led to the hand-picked selection of a passionate team for What Kind of World, but it also allows the option for artists Benson produces to have a home at Readymade – Readymade’s partnership with Lojinx also sees the release in Europe of Benson helmed albums by Young Hines and The Lost Brothers. “I’ve never done this before,” he says with evident delight, “but it’s cool to do it totally on my terms.” The multiple outside sources of inspiration and the support from family and friends have left Benson truly excited about What Kind of World. It also helps that it passed the test with his ultimate critic. “When I got my record back from mixing, I knew I had to listen to it,” Benson recalls. “My wife, Declan, and I were all in the room, and we cranked up the volume. Straight away Declan started dancing. He was throwing it down; he just wore himself out by the fourth or fifth song. And then he fell asleep in my arms. I walked around the room with him like that, and it was the coolest, most perfect thing. I knew, then, that I loved my record.” -Laura Barton

OCHO Announce details of debut album Titled: “YOUNG HUNTING”

Out: May 25th Available on iTunes

OCHO are one of Ireland’s best-kept Electronic secrets. Working hard perfecting their sound for over 2 years, they are finally ready to release their ambitious and infectious debut album YOUNG HUNTING. Combining atmospheric layered trans-cultural electronic music with lush dynamics akin to the likes of Imogen Heap and Mazzy Star.

OCHO are a collaborative collective made up of Stace Gill and DOS, with various guest musicians including Eanna Hickey, Gerry O’Connor, Jill Deering, Suzanne Savage, Lisa Cuthbert and Sarah Gleeson.

Gill has supported and shared the stage with many great musicians over the last few years including James Vincent McMorrow, Declan O’Rourke, The Brad Pitt Light Orchestra, and many more, and was recently asked to perform backing vocals for The Dubliner’s Patsy Watchorn’s latest album. Tony Fenton has described Stace Gill as “One of those rare gems worth highlighting” when he awarded her first collaboration with his highly coveted Daily Download spot on Today FM.

Producer and writer DOS began his career with a scholarship to Paul McCartney’s highly acclaimed Music college LIPA, an award given only to 1 student every year based on outstanding ability and potential.  DOS is a highly sought after producer, but has committed the majority of his time to this record.  He has worked on projects previously with Kool Keith, Guilty Simpson, DJ Tu-Ki and his previous band Exit 15. As Exit 15 DOS was chosen by David Holmes for a Sony PSP soundtrack. DOS has already been signed to labels in the UK and Sweden, but this album is most definitely his work of art.  He prides himself on attention to detail and creating new sounds unique to OCHO.  DOS is a modest genius, and OCHO’s debut album will for the first time reveal this hidden talent.

DOS’ collaboration with Gill has blended two unique talents into one mind-blowing sound. OCHO’s debut album will command your attention and leave you craving more.

MARILYN MANSON AND JOHNNY DEPP

CONSPIRE ON UPCOMING SONG

It’s not exactly the Bro-mance of Pitt and Clooney, but there’s been something special between Marilyn Manson and Johnny Depp for over a decade now. In fact, Manson was Depp’s date to the premiere of “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” at Disneyland, and a remix version Manson’s song “The Nobodies” was featured in the 2001 Johnny Depp film From Hell. Now the two have collaborated in song, covering Carly Simon’s legendary kiss-off track “You’re So Vain.” The song will be included on Manson’s upcoming May album Born Villain. Now who had clouds in their coffee and whose scarf it was apricot?

In other Manson news, the band performed “The Beautiful People” live with German industrial band Rammstein last night for the German music awards show ECHO. Log in here to witness it:

Marilyn Manson continues to upend the mainstream with each new release, and his upcoming album Born Villain is about to take that a bit further on May 1, 2012. Evidence#1, the single, “No Reflection”: http://bit.ly/mansonnoreflectionsoundcloud.

The tumultuous relationship Marilyn Manson has cultivated with the public through his genre-defying music and anti-status quo message of thinking for oneself has resulted in sold-out tours, protests, legal battles, adoration, hate, more than 50 million records sales, award-winning distilled spirits, several Grammy nominations and, most importantly, a long list of some of the most enduring and powerful singles ever, such as “Lunchbox,” “Get Your Gunn” “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” “The Beautiful People,” “Antichrist Superstar,” “Tourniquet,” “The Dope Show,” “I Don’t Like the Drugs (But the Drugs Like Me),” “The Fight Song,” “mOBSCENE,” “Heart-Shaped Glasses,” “Coma White” and “If I Was Your Vampire.”

Born Villain will be released on Cooking Vinyl and Manson’s own label Hell, Etc.   Marilyn Manson has had astounding success across the globe including three albums being certified platinum and three more certified gold in the USA, in addition to three top ten albums and two number-one albums (Mechanical Animals and The Golden Age of Grotesque). Leading up to the release of Born Villain, Marilyn Manson will be touring the United States for the first time since 2009. He kicks it off by headlining the Revolver “Golden Gods Awards” on April 11th at Club Nokia in Los Angeles his first U.S. performance in nearly three years.

WONDER VILLAINS ROCK U.S. DEBUT AT SXSW FESTIVAL

WONDER VILLAINS ROCK U.S. DEBUT AT SXSW FESTIVAL
(Wednesday, March 14th, 2012 – Austin, Texas) Derry’s electro-pop sensations, The Wonder Villains, have this week kicked off a string of American shows with a blinding debut at the SxSW festival in Austin, Texas.

The show, which was organised as part of the Northern Ireland trade mission to the festival, saw the Derry four-piece play in front of a capacity crowd on the same bill as established acts Cashier No 9, General Fiasco, Foy Vance and And So I Watch You From Afar. But it was the young group that created arguably the most buzz with passers-by literally dancing in the street during their infectious set.

Wonder Villains drummer, Kieran Coyle, said: “The show was unbelievable! The whole time we were on stage I just kept thinking how crazy it was to be playing in Texas. The venue was a really cool bar, it was packed and the crowd were really nice to us. It felt like something straight out of a movie!”

Rocky O’Reilly from the band’s management team added: “The band have enjoyed every second of travelling, rehearsing and preparing for this week. Watching them lock into their performance last night in a room packed with international Music, Interactive and Film delegates was a very special moment.  Being given the chance to represent Derry, together with the other acts and with the support of Digital Derry has been an inspirational opportunity for the guys. I hope Wonder Villains will have hundreds of career defining moments in the next twenty or thirty years. Last night definitely felt like one.”

Mark Nagurski from Digital Derry, who helped organise the event, said: “The Wonder Villains were absolutely brilliant. This entire trip has been about exposing Derry talent and Derry businesses to the world. The digital guys have spent a week networking hard and showcasing their work, and last night’s performance from The Wonder Villains really capped it off. They were simply brilliant.”

The band will continue to play showcasing events across and around the SxSW festival over the coming week, and, if their debut U.S. performance is anything to go by, this trip is unlikely to be the last.

### ENDS

Notes:

1. The Wonder Villains are an electro-pop band from Derry, Northern Ireland. You can find out more about them on http://wondervillains.bandcamp.com/
2. SxSW is one of the world’s largest industry festivals, attracting tens of thousands of delegates across film, music and interactive media.

Exclusive Stream of Marilyn Manson new single ‘NO REFLECTION’

TO RELEASE ALBUM BORN VILLAIN

(COOKCD554) April 30th (27th in Ireland)

Hear the lead single “No Reflection” (FRYDL509)

Los Angeles, CA…Marilyn Manson continues to upend the mainstream with each new release, and his upcoming album Born Villain is about to take that a bit further on April 30th, 2012. Evidence #1, the single, “No Reflection”: http://bit.ly/mansonnoreflectionsoundcloud

KROQ debuted “No Reflection” yesterday and the lead single will be available exclusively on iTunes this Tuesday, March 13th. Blabbermouth was first to catch the premiere, reporting that the song’s chugging, faint-friendly distortion offers plenty of sonic waves for Manson to glide over reminiscent of glory-era Ministry.

“The new record put simply has the ambition and determination of how I started making music in the first place,” Manson says. “It sounds like the first record in that it’s not afraid to do anything. I had to remove myself from my lifestyle and start fresh.”

“It doesn’t really sound like any of my old records,” Manson says in an upcoming Revolver magazine cover story. “In fact it sort of sounds like what I listened to before I made records — Killing Joke, Joy Division, Revolting Cocks, Bauhaus, Birthday Party…It’s very rhythm-driven. I think this will probably be the grandest concept record of all.”

The tumultuous relationship Marilyn Manson has cultivated with the public through his genre-defying music and anti-status quo message of thinking for oneself has resulted in sold-out tours, protests, legal battles, adoration, hate, more than 50 million records sales, award-winning distilled spirits, several Grammy nominations and, most importantly, a long list of some of the most enduring and powerful singles ever, such as “Lunchbox,” “Get Your Gunn” “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” “The Beautiful People,” “Antichrist Superstar,” “Tourniquet,” “The Dope Show,” “I Don’t Like the Drugs (But the Drugs Like Me),” “The Fight Song,” “Mobscene “Heart-Shaped Glasses,” “Coma White” and “If I Was Your Vampire.”
