Hotpress album review- Ocean Colour Scene

Ocean Colour Scene – Saturday 09 Mar 2010

While the heady days of TFI Friday and mainstream success are long gone, mod torch bearers Ocean Colour Scene have done an admirable job in staying the course. Saturday is their ninth record (count ‘em!), and if you liked their previous output then you’ll probably find lots of merit on the 16-track slab of wax.

Best tune by far is the Showaddywaddy-esque boogie of ‘Saturday,’

The Great Colm Lynch announces VILLAGE SHOW

Our wonderful and very handsome Meteor Nominee COLM LYNCH (AS SEEN ON NATIONAL TV TG4 TODAY FM, RTE RADIO1, IRADIO AND BBC) announces special gig in The Village on April 22nd.

The new single KISS MY BLUES AWAY is certainly a vast testament to Colm’s musical ability. Radio stations such as TODAY FM, F104, iRadio, RTE Radio1, 98FM and more have recently invited Colm in to celebrate his new single and to show their support. Remaining true to his philosophy that ‘a good song should have a strong melody and meaningful lyrics’, this critically acclaimed artist is eager to impress with his latest offering. If recent raving reviews from the Times, The Irish Independent, Hotpress, The Star and more are anything to go by, this album is certainly set to please and win over old and indeed new fans. Colm recently performed in the RDS to over 16,000 spectators at the interval of The Leinster Rugby Game after being invited by the organisers. He was also recently Nominated for Best newcomer Award at The Meteors. He will be performing a very special showcase on April 22nd in The Village on Wexford Street Dublin.

After a staggering Nationwide tour spanning 10 shows + , JSATC return to their home town of Belfast tonight March 4th, to celebrate the albums release upstairs in Auntie Annies. The band recently released their single LONG MAY YOU REIGN, to critical acclaim in Ireland. Performing on 4 National TV shows including: Ireland largest and most well known TV Show the TV Late Late Show (same night as other special guests Benicio Del Torro & Heather Mills), TG4’s Imeall, RTE TWO TUBE (Album of the week) & TG4’s POP CEOL. Birmingham’s emperors of rock’n’folk Ocean Colour Scene release their new album, Saturday, which will be preceded by digital singles, Magic Carpet Days on 25^th January & SATURDAY Single on April 4^th. Saturday -The album charted at #35 on the UK Album Chart upon its official release. OCS, who will be celebrating their 21^st anniversary next year, have clocked up an impressive eleven Top 20 singles and five Top 10 albums during their illustrious career. Ocean Colour Scene This ‘Saturday’- The Olympia

Ocean Colour Scene play The Olympia in Dublin this Saturday March 6th, celebrating their latest album  SATURDAY and current single ‘Magic Carpet Days’

Birmingham’s emperors of rock’n’folk Ocean Colour Scene are back with their ninth studio album, entitled Saturday (COOKCD511).

In the two years since 2007’s On The Leyline – described by Uncut as their “career best” – they’ve played with thrash metal bands in Korea, stolen the show at this year’s ‘V’ (where they were named ‘Band Of The Festival’ by Radio 2 and Absolute Radio) and later this month will jet off for a debut show in Dubai.

From the opening bars of  psych-folk opener ‘100 Floors Of Perception’ – written by Simon about the on-going financial crisis – to epic climax ‘Rockfield’  (think ‘Baba O’Riley’ meets ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’), it’s a reminder than when it comes to delivering  classic rock hooks there is simply no one better.  Denim-driven boogie ‘Old Pair Of Jeans’ (written by Bennett) will delight those hankering for the full-tilt mod-pop of ‘For Dancers Only’, while Harry Kidnap’ (written in tribute to John Weller) boasts shades of North Atlantic Drift stand-out ‘Make The Deal’.

Lyrical themes ranging from Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist (‘Mrs Maylie’)  to the British way of life ( standout ‘Village Life’), meanwhile, are a reminder of  Simon’s acute observational eye.

Musically, it’s just as impressive.  Listen close and you’ll hear echoes of  everyone from Simon & Garfunkel to Mott The Hoople and Vivaldi in these loose-limbed grooves,  not to mention  trippy string sections, sky-scraping ‘Great Gig In The Sky’ backing vocals, punk riffs and even the occasional burst of mandolin.

Surefire smash ‘Magic Carpet Days’, meanwhile (key lyric: “The world won’t shake you/Knock you down and break you/I’ll steer you through these magic carpet days”) is a reminder that their belief in the Mod aesthetic of self-improvement remains as strong as ever.

With a full U.K tour booked for early next year, OCS will be celebrating in style. But before then…and

In the meantime, they’ll see you in Ireland in The Olympia on Saturday.
